georgetakei,

The Internet of Things just got very real. Perhaps it’s bitcoin… laundering?

podkaynelives,

@georgetakei I don't like my appliances to be smarter than me, which can be a problem 😆

ZILtoid1991,

@georgetakei Could be a case of someone figuring out how to hack them in order to run them as part of botnetwors for DDOS attacks.

No antivirus, no one finds out what you're doing.

@georgetakei nice one 😁

@georgetakei Seems buying a good non smart Roper or Whirlpool washer instead would be a smart move.

ZILtoid1991,

@Luna @georgetakei
Or just don't use the smart functions. I have an LG washer, and I didn't find the ability of remote start and program download needed.

riedlr,

@georgetakei thars GOLD in them thar washing machines!

@georgetakei Why does a washing machine need to be accessing the Internet?

On WiFi to see status would be nice. No need to leave the LAN.

@i_gvf @georgetakei The best theory going is that this is continual fail-and-retry of a firmware update.

I don't know why this would be a thing necessarily, infinite retry is dumb and if it's washing clothes successfully without self-destructing then I can't think of any critical update it would need.
