American videogame controller buttons are left to right just like their written language

Japanese videogame controller buttons are right to left just like their written language

WAKE UP PEOPLE IT'S NOT THAT HARD

why,
@why@shitposter.club avatar

@feld sega is american? news to me

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

@why Master System was smart and had buttons labeled 1 and 2

coolboymew,
@coolboymew@shitposter.club avatar

@feld @why and it lacked a fucking pause button, it's ON the fucking console. Good luck not pressing reset instead!

coolboymew,
@coolboymew@shitposter.club avatar

@why @feld it was

why,
@why@shitposter.club avatar

@coolboymew @feld yeah i know they have history as american but lets not get into that conspiracy theory

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

@why those Sega controllers are laid out more like 6 button arcade games so it's less confusing anyway

my original statement is useful when mentally switching between nearly-identical controller layouts like Nintendo and Xbox

Sony was smart and used symbols instead of letters. I give them props for that.

why,
@why@shitposter.club avatar

@feld also hate to break it to you but sony uses nintendo's layout. they were originally just using super famicom layout, and when the deal fell through they renamed:
A, first button, confirm, 1, one line, circle
B, second button, back, 2, two lines, cross
X, third button, 3, three lines, triangle
Y, fourth button, 4, four lines, square
in JP, circle means yes, and many JP games use circle (in the place of nintendos A) for confirm.

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

@why Interesting bit of history but I'm not convinced they're the "same" just because the buttons are oriented the same.

You use X on Playstation to select menu items but on Nintendo you use A whose equivalent is Sony's O

If Sony made you use O to choose menu items I'd be more inclined to agree that they're essentially the same.

why,
@why@shitposter.club avatar

@feld Japanese playstation OS and games use O for select, up until PS4.
Many localized jp ps1/ps2 games didnt patch the input, metal gear solid is a famous example. there was no US standard for "back button" on ps1, many games used triangle for back and accepted both cross and circle for "confirm".

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

@why I remember MGS being like that and I do recall some old games that accepted both X and O

why,
@why@shitposter.club avatar

@feld controller history is fucking wild not enough people sperg out about this stuff

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

@why I was far too poor and rural to be able to get my hands on Japanese consoles or games back then

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

@why i used to think this was hot shit (and it was for games like Jazz Jackrabbit)

reitoei,

@why @feld in Japanese schools, when an answer in a student's book is correct, sensei will circle it ⭕ and not use a "tick" ✔️like a UK or US teacher might.

So that's a thing.

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

@reitoei @why our stock chart emojis are also red for gains and blue for losses due to Japanese weirdness

📈

📉

I'm actually surprised these aren't localized.

lanodan,
@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me avatar

@why @feld I so wish US would also use O for confirm and main because it's just so annoying when switching between games.

why,
@why@shitposter.club avatar

@lanodan @feld fun fact the ps vita has the confirm button baked into the system. if you buy a jp vita and hack it to run an english OS the confirm button will still be circle. there are ways to fake it but some dialogs will still use the old setting.

lanodan,
@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me avatar

@why @feld Meanwhile I'm over there using Logitech/Steam/… controllers and wanting things to be physically consistent.

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

@why as a counterpoint to your submission I present you the American Atari Jaguar controller which restores the balance in the universe

NonPlayableClown,
@NonPlayableClown@postnstuffds.lol avatar

Counter counter point. The Philips CDi controller.

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

@NonPlayableClown What are you showing me the remote for a recliner with a massage function

thegreatape,
@thegreatape@thechimp.zone avatar

@feld I never thought about it like that but totally makes sense. I just assumed they couldn't have the same layout for bullshit patent reasons / company preference.

FUCKINGWHOCARESDUDE,
@FUCKINGWHOCARESDUDE@5dollah.click avatar

And you're right. Why do you think the Xbox controller has the left joystick in the wrong place?

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

@FUCKINGWHOCARESDUDE Brb gonna make a controller with sticks in every possible location to use as a parent troll

ElDeadKennedy,
@ElDeadKennedy@shitposter.club avatar

@feld what really fucks me up is when i play a pc game with my ps3 controller and the screen shows a different layout

ElDeadKennedy,
@ElDeadKennedy@shitposter.club avatar

@feld WHAT THE FUCK IS "A"?
