The Peony Lantern or Botan dōrō is a Japanese folk tale about a ghost that comes back for her lover. It is well known in Japan and is one of their most famous ghost stories. There are many versions. Below is a link to one version I happen to have open at this time. The one I was thinking of when I started my novel is a Victorian rendering.
