I'm sure it's problematic in like 2 dozen different ways, and I respect all of those arguments but Big Trouble in Little China is a top 5 movie for me.
Apparently True Fact: Big Trouble in Little China was greenlit and programmed to run against The Golden Child (a top 10 movie for me), which ALSO STARS James Hong and Victor Wong.
You simply couldn't do Big Trouble without Kurt Russell, nobody else could have sold "sidekick who thinks he's the main character". But Bill Murray or Bruce Willis could sell Chandler Jarrell (presumably with a different name) in Golden Child.
@tqbf can be said about many excellent films he’s in. also props for the golden child reference. the blood in the oatmeal scene is what comes to mind because it’s just weird, man.
@tky It's the thing I remembered most about the movie. I'll say Kurt Russell is much more important to Big Trouble's casting than Murphy is to Golden Child. Golden Child would have worked without Murphy.
