Weather is a mess in this corner of the world today. After freezing rain yesterday, it's turned unseasonably warm and the rain is causing the rare situation of puddles on top of the snow.

@ottaross I broke up all the ice yesterday on my driveway and then realized there was no physical way I could shovel it all onto the pile of snow on the front yard. So I pushed it to one side on my driveway. I’m hoping it melts so I don’t have to deal with it!

@YurkshireLad I shovelled some bits this morning from the sidewalk plough going by, and realized you have to be careful where you throw it, as it just all slides back down into the driveway – lol

@ottaross doh!!

The hop vines and the hydrangea look a nice rusty colour of red against the snow.

And the compost bin is very attractive this time of year.

@ottaross It’s just gross. When we moved here, these thaws in January were very rare. You’d have a few days at most above freezing in January and February. Now the weather here is more like what it was in Boston, where we lived before here. My bet is on the NCC announcing that they are no longer going to be doing skating on the canal after this year. Maybe they’ll hold out until next year, but I’d put money on it being gone pretty soon.

@jaybaltz Yeah it'll be a shame if it was only a couple of days long season.

I suspect we'll see a point where the NCC picks a 1km stretch and just installs a refrigeration system every year to have some token canal skating in the changing climate.

We used to just get one thaw per winter, right in time for Winterlude. lol

@ottaross @jaybaltz Yeah, I love the idea of the Canal, and everything, but I really don't want us using resources to "force it open" when it's caused by... climate change.

@stephanie @jaybaltz My thinking is they'll face some pressure from tourism operators to ensure there's something there for visitors to check it off.
Perhaps they'll buy carbon credits or put a solar PV array up along Lansdowne or something.

jaybaltz,

@ottaross Yeh, the thaw was always timed to melt the ice sculptures right after they were finished! I do t think they’ll do a refrigeration system both because of cost and because they’ve committed to making Winterlude carbon neutral. Unless they can solar power it or something.

gemelliz,

@jaybaltz @ottaross Last week, I was out looking to replace a pair of 15+ year old winter boots. You know the ones we used to wear in Jan/Feb - knee-high, pile-lined, warm to -30. The mall had sooo much inventory in boots (and winter coats) and were offering big discounts. But, in the end, I decided not to buy a pair as I'll likely not use that type of footwear enough to justify the purchase. Maybe I'll check out rainboots instead. 🥴

@ottaross Oh wow, I just realized that we can see similar puddles in the neighbour's front yard. I've never seen that before. Thanks for pointing it out!

@stephanie Should be interesting when it freezes again, if it doesn't absorb into the snow. Like little mirrors scattered around.

@ottaross
I feel like I'm lucky with the snow Toronto had mostly disappearing even though it was borderline sticking when we arrived on Tuesday. It's 7 degrees and looks almost like spring here with the sun coming out today.

ottaross,
@ottaross@mastodon.social avatar

@kinetix a nice mid-winter respite.
A couple of more days above zero here before we freeze up again. Hoping our canal skating holds out!

@ottaross
I haven't been following too closely but I knew it was delayed - the canal skating did eventually get going then?

ottaross,
@ottaross@mastodon.social avatar

@kinetix Yes, just last weekend they were able to open up a few kilometres, but it has been closed now with the thaw. If it can hold out, we're freezing again on Monday.
