@teacherbuknoy Budget/cost-cutting, haha! That was one of the things my team lamented about when we were coming up with the website counterpart for our print mag.
@luthien1126 aww that's really sad. I could forgive basic websites, but some are just downright ugly, (e.g. they use 12px font size when that's too small for the web).
But even sadder that it's cost that's the reason, because print magazines are gorgeous 😭 I frequently buy magazines only for the layouts and I used to practice replicating them in my web layouts.
@teacherbuknoy Print magazines take a lot of work to produce. I acknowledge that digital media has its benefits, of course, but the level of discipline and quality control is not on par with print.
I remember us wondering why our website has the same look as the rest of our sister titles, and all we could conclude was that the websites follow the same template because it's cost-efficient that way, which really takes away the brand identity of each title. Pfft.
@luthien1126 yes! Art direction isn't really incentivized in web design, especially since people mostly come and go for the content and utility than for the visual art. It's also free, as opposed to print being subscription/paid per issue.
I myself wanted to create an art directed website. I wanted to make my website a digital replication of a print magazine, but it takes so much effort to create and maintain.
