ct_bergstrom,

Vaccination saves lives and money in two ways.

  1. Directly reducing hospitalization and other health care costs in those vaccinated

  2. Reducing transmission and thereby protecting even the unvaccinated.

Free COVID boosters would be an excellent public health investment.

@ct_bergstrom You forgot a third way: by reducing hospitalization and illness they prevent community healthcare resources from being overwhelmed, so they'll be there when you need them for something totally unrelated to the vaccine.

    @ct_bergstrom I know you know this, Carl, so I apologize for wording my reply poorly. I should have said "Also," rather than "You forgot."
    Having said that, we're both on the same side here, you didn't have to jump down my throat like that.
    Peace.

    ct_bergstrom,

    @jik Fair.

    ct_bergstrom,

    Somewhat more technically, fifteen years ago we wrote about how vaccination generates positive externalities (item 2 above) and thus the private market underallocates relative to socially optimal levels of vaccination.
