@sysop408 I found out my local thrift store has a huge bin of cables. So that made me a little more comfortable getting rid of some. They don't charge much, and they have a ton of them, so it's almost like having a lending library of cables.
Current first world problem. Whenever I need a USB-C cable, I keep finding micro-USB cables. When I need a micro-USB cable, I keep grabbing the USB-C ones.
@sysop408 I have solved this problem by grouping cables with like cables, and keeping each group in a separate, labeled (see-thru) bag in the “cable drawer”. Reduces the frustration 10x 🤓
@ixtility I would try this, but then my original post would read:
"Does anyone get angry at their ginormous bin full of bags of cables and adapters grouped together."
Also, I'm pretty sure there's nothing I'll be able to do to keep my lovebird micro-USB and USB-C cables from over-nighting in each other's bag. Sometimes the mini-USB will also jump in for the kink.
@sysop408 every tenth time I need an A/V-cable, I surprisingly need DP-on-HDMI, which I’d swear I bought ten years ago and always just use as intermediary solution … but I can never find it. Everytime I need an HDMI cable, I pull out of the box this specific DP-on-HDMI-cable 🤷🏼♂️
@shinjiikarus this is me anytime I need a PS/2 to USB-A.
Then when I do finally find a PS/2 to USB-A, it's a passive PS/2 to USB-A that I should have just thrown out years ago.
The one area where I don't have much pain is with A/V cables though! I have three different multi-adapters that I chose very carefully to have almost no overlap so I can do anything I need with by chaining two of them together if a single one won't do.
@sysop408 yes, i have the same metaproblem: try sticking in a usb micro cable up down up, does not fit, try sticking in usb-c up-down-up, does not fit, try sticking in usb micro cable up-down-up, fits on final
attempt
@flyingsaceur I think you're missing a step. The penultimate step is to buy a new device or wait 2 weeks for repairs to come back after the port is trashed from having the wrong connector smashed into it.
Not angry so much as dismayed. They're all neatly filed in a drawer but I know the majority will never be used for anything again. Seems like such a waste.
@EverydayMoggie the worst is when you look at giant tangle of cables and can't find the one you want and your only viable option is to... buy another cable or adapter that'll end up in the giant pile sooner or later.
@sysop408
I try to ignore mine as much as possible. A couple years ago we had a local electronics recycling event, and I finally dumped a lot of stuff I'd been holding since 2000. 😉
@chessert I'm most afraid of dumping the cables that have the least chance of ever being used again. I have a super heavy duty SCSI cable that's probably strong enough to suspend a car so I'm like "OMG, what if I somehow end up with an old SCSI drive I need to connect to a computer I don't have anymore or WHAT IF I NEED TO SUSPEND A CAR?"
