@Jyoti I feel Trumpet is a different class there though. You couldn’t claim you liked him ok as he was a good guy until X, he’s not been a good guy for decades and is in a league of his own, matched mainly by Boris in c*ntery.

@Jyoti I have assiduously avoided declaring myself a fan of anything for this reason. It seemed to become a ridiculous badge of stupidity in the early 2000s with the "fandoms", which seemed little more than a corporate badge of honour.

I can proudly say that while I liked The Smiths, Morrissey is a prick.
I've been hating JK Rowling and her coterie that needs to "read another book" since before it was fashionable.

I think having an unfixed personality is sometimes a curse, but not always

Oh, I'm a huuuge fan of loads of things. But if I find out the creator is a turd, I stop following / watching / reading.

It's simple!

The other mentality... well, that's Flat Earthers, innit? Or very religious people. No actual interaction with the facts will ever change their minds.

@Jyoti @HornedLivestock isn't it a bit more complicated when it's not a singular creator? Like, there were other people in The Smiths. Or in the case of a film hundreds of people are involved to some degree. Is every film produced by the Weinsteins unwatchable now?

(I'm not trying to be awkward, I'm genuinely not sure)

I try not to be to absolutist. Partially, because I can never be sure of some motivations, partially because I think that people's personality and ideas can and may evolve, partially because listening and reading positions are not entirely fixed, which means that the art can often be separated from the artist.

I will make the distinction between the benefit of an idea, which is often just a particular expression of a collective notion, and the odiousness of the personality.

Everybody has to find their own line - I'm not imposing my views on anyone.

You have to find what you're comfortable with. Personally, I will never play or promote anyone who is a Nazi. That's a hard no from me.

Every time a Smiths record is played, the Nazi known as Morrissey receives royalties.

It's not complex for me, I don't give money to fascists.

I'm not so sure - some fandoms are more extreme than others. Morrissey fans have always been zealots from the start. Smiths fans could be, true but were more... average?

There's fandom and then there's cult of personality. These people I'm talking about could get people to join some kind of bunker enclave.

Obviously, you can always find extreme fans but I think there's just proportionately more with the above.
