If you criticize me for going out to empty places sitting by open windows with my CO2 monitor showing safe air during the lowest point of infections in eight months, I'm happy to block you. The vast majority of people are simply completely ignoring COVID-19. I'm not. But I think people have a right to make informed decisions to minimize risk while living life. If you accept the risk of driving in a car, don't bash others for making informed decisions to enjoy life. Life is balance.

@augieray

I won't criticize your choices, but I will point out that decisions about masking in public are exactly like decisions about driving a car, in that there are at least two things to think about:

  1. What risk am I assuming for myself, and;
  2. What risk am I imposing on those around me?

And just like cars, there is sensible discussion to be had about how much risk we allow individuals to impose on both themselves and on each other.

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@raganwald I understand, look around you. I'm part of the fraction of one percent who does mask when I can. Criticizing ANYONE for taking ANY precautions and suggesting they endanger others in a world where almost no one cares is simply not fair. Unless you slam every photo you see from every friend who attends concerts, conferences and crowded spaces (things I won't do), I simply won't accept criticism for trying to live my life safely and with awareness of mine and others' risks.

@augieray Much prefer seeing you demonstrating how to navigate activities as safely as possible to the rest of the population running all over creation behaving like Covid isn’t a problem. Somebody has to try to find the balance and show—for better or worse—what it looks like to make informed decisions. Just because it may not be what I’m going to do, it’s good to see what is possible.

eniko,

@thatkatharine @augieray yeah it's much better to see someone make an evidence-based assessment that exceeds my risk tolerance than to watch people make terrible choices because they can't be bothered to acknowledge reality

@irenes@mastodon.social avatar

@eniko @thatkatharine @augieray very much agreed

@irenes @eniko @thatkatharine Thank you. I appreciate that.

What is thinking behind a C02 monitor?

A correlation between more C02 - more exhalations - more virus?

3TomatoesShort,
@3TomatoesShort@disabled.social avatar

@Methylcobalamin
Exactly that, yes - in a well ventilated space, the CO2 will be lower due to a good inflow of outdoors air, while in poorly ventilated & crowded spaces the CO2 climbs very quickly. It can actually be quite startling when you start taking a CO2 monitor around to different places.

@3TomatoesShort @augieray

If I am indoors away from home, I stay masked.

What is considered a high CO2 level in terms of increased viral danger?

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@Methylcobalamin @3TomatoesShort One thing to keep in mind (which may be obvious) is that higher CO2 is a proxy for infection risks in rooms with other people. I've found with my CO2 monitor that I can get near 1500 ppm simply being myself in my home office for a couple hours with the doors and windows closed. CO2 is its own risk, and it also represents infection risk in rooms with shared air between multiple people.

I never really enjoyed eating inside restaurants (food is very much overpriced), so I am happy to no longer go.

There is so much pressure to go eat in restaurants (if you do not eat in restaurants, you are apparently not "living your life"). It would be nice to not be put under so much pressure to eat in restaurants. Poor people were never able to eat in restaurants. We never cared about whether poor people live their best lives.

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@ABScientist Everyone has a different need for social interactions. Seriously, stop feeling it's your place to criticize others for their own social decisions. The fact YOU don't feel that doesn't make it wrong for others. I don't get people's love for sports, but I'd never think it was my place to criticize others for their preferences.

ABScientist,
@ABScientist@forall.social avatar

@augieray

The problem is that I get lots of criticism from everyone that I am wasting my life by not doing all the things that they enjoy doing.

There is a lot of social pressure to join others in their birthday parties, their weddings, their restaurant dinners, etc.

So it is mostly a response to others telling me that I am not enjoying my life and telling me how I should live my life.

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@ABScientist I wouldn't criticize you for your decisions--but you seem quick to criticize others for theirs. Also, I get people being concerned about someone who won't do ANY social activities for fear of infection. I've said this to you in the past, but if you're willing to accept the risk of being behind the wheel, then trying to avoid all infection risk makes no sense. None of us can live with no risk, so we have to be smart about balance, IMO.

ABScientist,
@ABScientist@forall.social avatar

@augieray

I am not driving either. I find it scary too.

Why do things that bring you lots of anxiety and you do not enjoy?

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@ABScientist That's the right decision for you. But, you've jumped into my threads a couple times to comment on my trying to do things that bring my happiness and do them safely. In fact, as an extrovert, staying home all the time brings me lots of anxiety and I do not enjoy it. My point is, I don't like being criticized for my choices any more than you do yours. So please recognize I don't take these decisions lightly and am trying hard to bring balance between risks and my social needs.
