If I were to go hunt down an old ThinkPad as the one ThinkPad for my collection, given the Wallstreet PowerBook is one of my ever-favourites, what year & model should I be hovering around?

@NanoRaptor It's all opinions, so in that case, mine is the T23. 98SE, 2000, Me or XP as options, feature-complete with the UltraBay and UltraPorts, Celerons or PIII processors, the only pain point I'd really harp on is the S3 SuperSavage, just because it lacks the coolest part of S3 graphics: S3TC.

@NanoRaptor X300 is the design outlier. It comes with nanoraptor-vibe preinstalled.
For me „the one“ is the T42p for old-gen thinkpads or the first X1c for new-gen Thinkpads.
Honorable mention and probably actually the most preserveworthy one to get: 701C because of the unique keyboard.

@NanoRaptor …oh, and then there‘s the W701DS (with fold-out second screen - no, really!)

@nblr @NanoRaptor I think on the "already oldschool, but still useful" scale, and the overall size and design awesomeness, I'd go with the X201. (There was a "fan remake", but stupidly I was too stingy back then to buy the replacement motherboard and screen they offered…)
The X300 would probably have offered more runtime than my X201, but seriously, with the heavy duty battery plugged into the back, I could do solidly beyond "workday including travel", so that wasn't that strong an argument.

@funkylab @NanoRaptor I picked the X300 deliberately because it was the first lenovo design by David Hill. It has a few oddities that never showed up in later or earlier models. Such as the peculiar placement of LED indicators.

@NanoRaptor Just my opinion, but if you want the ULTIMATE ThinkPad, then it has to be the one with the butterfly keyboard. The Thinkpad 701

@guffo @NanoRaptor In particular you want the Thinkpad 701P model with the PowerPC 603e processor running MacOS 7 during that brief period when IBM was courting Apple and paying the MacOS license fee! An absolute classic, and as rare as hens teeth.

@nblr@chaos.social avatar

@cstross @guffo @NanoRaptor OK. That is a true NanoRaptor-Device. Wow.
(half unsure if you’re not kidding)

@nblr @guffo @NanoRaptor Am totally kidding!

@cstross @guffo @NanoRaptor You people seriously erode my trust in things I see and read on the Internet.

uliwitness,
@uliwitness@chaos.social avatar

@cstross @guffo @NanoRaptor You made that up, didn’t you? I can't find any info on that. Dangit, I knew I would have heard of IBM actually making a Mac back then, but I wanted it to be true. 😭

@uliwitness @cstross @guffo @NanoRaptor

I've never heard of them courting Apple for a Mac OS license fee but that doesn't seem that far fetched.

I think this is the thinkpad in question:

@kc2ihx @uliwitness @guffo @NanoRaptor Yeah well, that's why I invented it! (Classic leg-pull.)
