01/05/2024 OMG! What happened to your MC's parents?

  1. Esther’s father was one of the richest golden boys of his time. For most, he was a successful business angel...
  2. For his family, he was a demon: Obsessed with social recognition, we must be tools to help him rise higher and higher.
  3. Remove a small brick from the building, and the whole building is ready to collapse

02/05/2024 Have you had an idea part way through a project that requires extensive rewriting of what you've already done?

Erie was initially a spy in disguise at the Chamberlain service, with serious witchy and warrior skills. I rewrote her for R. Leblanc contest in 2023, making her far less badass. She is now just a young leonine, without much trump cards in her hands, trying to get out of her condition.

Érié as she is now: very upset by her first meeting with Dr Moreau, she’s climbing stairs crying

03/05/2024 Does your work include pictures, maps or other custom graphics? Share your pics.

Hmm yes, having images is even the principle of a comic book😁

@nautilebleu

I was so disappointed. All that black ink and so little text. I'm not sure what you were thinking of?

nautilebleu,
@nautilebleu@mamot.fr avatar

@NaraMoore If pictures are worth a thousand words, I just shared 133k words on those two pages. It´s not so bad I think 😉

Thank goodness pictures don't actually get counted that way. It would scare off my computer readers.

04/05/2024 What's the worst thing about being a writer artist?

According to Les Etats généraux de la bande dessinée (General States of the Comics), 33% of the comics artists were living below poverty level in France in 2017. Things didn’t change for the best since

A few months ago, a movement for a European artist status has been launched, including hashtags & I did a supporting art

05/05/2024 Is there a certain kind of story or arc that is easier for you to write as a short story than others?

Until now, and with the exception of the initial story, all Inktober have been prequels about the youth of a character:
⁃ 2020: Youth of the Chamberlain
⁃ 2022: Youth of Erie
⁃ 2023: Youth of Esther

[Illustration: first days of each Inktober]

Inktober 2022 Day 01: Mrs Helen and her husband are travelling on a canoe to the Great North to meet the Leonines and evangelise them.
Inktober 2023 Day 01: Esther is dreaming about her teen years; the dream starts with her in the attic of her father’s mansion

07/05/2024 Do you add a copyright statement to your work? How comprehensive is it?

Yes, I just add the French typical copyright statement.

08/05/2024 When writing technical or scientific detail, how much is plausible versus imagined?

That’s why I don’t do Hard Sci-fi, I don’t want someone who comes to explain me that this very small detail that appears only in one panel is not accurate.

09/05/2024 What's the minimum time you can work on your writing? Do you need a long, clear period?

Luckily no, because I never have such periods. I mostly work by microperiods (but thanks to the two days off, I have 2 long periods of… one hour for starting working on the chapter 2)

11/05/2024 What character have you written that's the most unlike you?

Lady D’Arcy 😅 I hope not to be a sadistic narcissist sociopath (not to mention that she’s a woman)

13/05/2024 When does AI cross the line between helpful tool and problematic tech for writing and publishing?

AIs using LLM raises several problems :
⁃ legal: it steals illegally content for training
⁃ environmental: it requires looooooots of energy
⁃ social: it relies on cheap mass labour

14/05/2024 Do you have a sense of how much plot you need for how long a manuscript?

One A4 page for 20 pages

Just teasing.😉 Still, I can see how a graphic novel needs more planning than a regular one. Artwork is difficult to revise.

nautilebleu,
@nautilebleu@mamot.fr avatar

@sfwrtr Once I attended a conf by Denis Bajram (a quiet famous French comics artist) who said that he was writer, dialogue writer, storyboarder, costume designer, decorator, lighting designer, FX manager, stuntman, all jobs that are handled by different people in a movie but in comics, you have to do all by yourself (for the minimum wage 🙃)

16/05/2024 What's your target audience? Why?

Having sexy heroines and villainess, I was thinking most of my readers would be (middle-aged) men. It appears that my audience seems to be mostly women 🤗 What did I expect?

17/05/2024 Other than writing drawing, what's your go-to creative outlet

I voluntarily concentrate only on one artistic expression. I believe that in order to reach the quality I want, I must dedicate all my time and energy on becoming a better comic artist.

18/05/2024 Have you written sections where the action occurs against the clock? How did you do it?

In a sense, the whole is a race against the clock to save Esther from the evil that devour her. How do I do it? Hmm, you have to buy the books 😈

nautilebleu,
@nautilebleu@mamot.fr avatar

19/05/2024 Do you agree with Hillary Mantell, who said the best qualities for writing are self-confidence and arrogance?

An aspiring artist certainly needs a good dose of self-confidence and arrogance to go through the publishing industry and the critics. That’s one of the reasons I give up doing comics two decades ago. My personal life journey helped me to be stronger and more confident, and that’s why I restarted.

nautilebleu,
@nautilebleu@mamot.fr avatar

20/05/2024 When did you first know you wanted to be a writer artist ?

I always wanted, but I struggled with lack of confidence and personal issues until a few years ago. Midlife crisis helped me to cope with those.

nautilebleu,
@nautilebleu@mamot.fr avatar

21/05/2024 Do you format as you write draw or do that at the end?

Mostly in the end: after having drawn all the pages for an issue, I put them in Affinity Publisher to add speech bubbles and the texts

22/05/2024 If someone were to write your autobiography, who would you want to write it?

Call me Optimus Prime! So I can write my own autobiography (or better, my truckbiography)
