Do you use a cover artist or design your own covers? Share your cover art.

I used to hire cover artists. Meanwhile, however, I had some bad experiences and gained more skills myself. I surely do not range among the top cover artists - but truth be told: We all know how hard it is to make some good money with books. Thus, I've done the newest ones myself. The latest is for after some very good input from folks here.

@anderlandbooks This one is far better than the one you previously shared! I like it shows Katja who seems to invite the reader to follow her

@anderlandbooks I’m glad if I could have been of some help ☺️ Now this cover tells a story (and hopefully, the same as the book! )

#writerscoffeeclub May 21. Do you format as you write or do that at the end?

The minute I know that something will be longer than just a scene, I do basic formatting. I'm writing in word, and it simply makes it easier to navigate the document if I've got headers, parts, and so on.
However, I do the final formatting for ebook, PB and HC only once I'm done. They differ too much, so it's 3 different docs in the end.

I final formatted #OdysseyToThePromisedLand yesterday!

@anderlandbooks I’ve published the French paper version of the 1st chapter and I’m working on the digital ones, a American friend helps me for the English version, there’s still one point we need to find the correct translation. Hopefully I can release it this week!

@anderlandbooks Hi if I’m right your book is about the Children ‘s crusade? It makes me think of this French comics https://www.bdgest.com/chronique-3647-BD-Croisade-des-Enfants-La-Croisade-des-Enfants.html The book hasn’t good reviews but I think the cover is quite representative of the content.

Also, your book is centred around Katja, I would show her on the cover. It would help the reader to understand what the story is about (the era, who’s the protagonist) and starts to make a connection with her.

01/05/2024 OMG! What happened to your MC's parents?

  1. Esther’s father was one of the richest golden boys of his time. For most, he was a successful business angel...
  2. For his family, he was a demon: Obsessed with social recognition, we must be tools to help him rise higher and higher.
  3. Remove a small brick from the building, and the whole building is ready to collapse

18/05/2024 Have you written sections where the action occurs against the clock? How did you do it?

In a sense, the whole is a race against the clock to save Esther from the evil that devour her. How do I do it? Hmm, you have to buy the books 😈

19/05/2024 Do you agree with Hillary Mantell, who said the best qualities for writing are self-confidence and arrogance?

An aspiring artist certainly needs a good dose of self-confidence and arrogance to go through the publishing industry and the critics. That’s one of the reasons I give up doing comics two decades ago. My personal life journey helped me to be stronger and more confident, and that’s why I restarted.

nautilebleu,
@nautilebleu@mamot.fr avatar

20/05/2024 When did you first know you wanted to be a writer artist ?

I always wanted, but I struggled with lack of confidence and personal issues until a few years ago. Midlife crisis helped me to cope with those.

nautilebleu,
@nautilebleu@mamot.fr avatar

21/05/2024 Do you format as you write draw or do that at the end?

Mostly in the end: after having drawn all the pages for an issue, I put them in Affinity Publisher to add speech bubbles and the texts

22/05/2024 If someone were to write your autobiography, who would you want to write it?

Call me Optimus Prime! So I can write my own autobiography (or better, my truckbiography)

01/05/2024 Introduce your setting as if it's a character in your story.

The McAlistair mansion POV: “I’m currently the host of Esther and her strange little maid. Before I belonged to Esther’s husband, but he wasn’t with them when they came back from the colonies. Something has happened there, I don’t know what, but it makes Esther ill. The little strange maid tries her best to help.”

19/05/2024 How did you settle on your MC's appearance?

When I dreamt of Esther’s story, I had nearly all her features in mind. But I didn’t have any experience in drawing dark skinned people or in Victorian fashion. It took me 4 years to get a style and the quality I wanted.

@NaraMoore The story behind is quite weird, latex isn’t the weirdest aspect: a few years before, I was working for a web agency specialised in solutions for farming and agrochemical products companies. The CTO, who was an alcoholic who enjoys watching p0rn at work, sends me the Bianca Beauchamp website, telling me to redo our own copying hers 🙃 When thinking of Lady d’Arcy, I remember her and thought that her exaggerated curves would be perfect.

nautilebleu,
@nautilebleu@mamot.fr avatar

#wordweavers 21/05/2024 Do you consider how your MC's appearance may contribute to stereotypes?

Esther is a stunningly beautiful woman with everything where it should just in the needed quantity, who loves to fashion. She spends lots of time taking care of her appearance. So she adheres to most of Victorian young lady’s stereotypes (except being dark skinned).

A pencil sketch of Esther in corset, her left arm outstretched and large hoop earrings. The background features hatching and radiating lines.

nautilebleu,
@nautilebleu@mamot.fr avatar

@NaraMoore well depending on the targeted audience, it could be a good idea, but for ours, probably not (no surprise this web agency has failed a few months later when the 1st internet bubble exploded)

nautilebleu,
@nautilebleu@mamot.fr avatar

22/05/2024 Is your antagonist more a dragon or a dragon rider?

Lady d’Arcy is definitely a dragon rider: you have to be crazy to do such a dangerous thing as riding a dragon, but the reward is high, exactly the kind of feat she would take.

[Illustrations: dragons exist in my universe… but they are rode by leonines]
