Who else is making a note of the authors of rah-rah-AI-everything, rah-rah-GPT articles so as not to believe anything these chumps ever write again?

Just me? Huh.

@dsalo I’m pretty anti-“AI”, but I will admit that I’m curious what it can do with my own writing samples.

dsalo,
@dsalo@digipres.club avatar

@waynedixon curiosity is fine, I'm generally in favor of it!

(though I am muzzling mine because AI bros are terrible and the environmental impact is super not great)

waynedixon,
@waynedixon@mastodon.social avatar

@dsalo oh, I absolutely won’t argue with doing that. They’re just as bad as cr*pto bros. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Venn diagram of the two groups is just a single circle.

dsalo,

@waynedixon I lost my last shred of curiosity when the LAION bros got confronted with the existence of extremely private medical images in their training set and were just like "welp."

@$$holes. Karma got 'em (CSAM was found not long after; the training set and model then abruptly disappeared) but ffs.

waynedixon,
@waynedixon@mastodon.social avatar

@dsalo wow, I hadn’t known about that, but at the same time I haven’t been paying attention to what has been happening, except to know that the source of training data is suspect.

@dsalo I'm doing this more so than I did with blockchain for some reason. Maybe because the frenzy pitch is higher and more pervasive.

dsalo,
@dsalo@digipres.club avatar

@edsu I may be wrong about this, but I remember seeing rather fewer librarians climbing onto the blockchain/cryptocurr/NFT train, and of those, several of them were already known to me as total hucksters.

Librarianship just seems to be a lot more susceptible to AI gullibility? I wish I knew why.

adr,
@adr@mastodon.social avatar

@dsalo @edsu I don't reallly know which side of this particular fence I fall on for you folks, but I will say that back of the envelope observation from librarians seems to be about.... 70% vehement disgust and distrust of AI and maybe 10% or so true-believer types.

of that 10%, it does seem like end-career, "Thought Leader" types might be overrepresented. :D

@adr @dsalo @edsu Not to name any names or anything.... ;-)

(end of career: yes; though leader: never in a million years)

dsalo,
@dsalo@digipres.club avatar

@djfiander I was actually carping because of https://newsie.social/@infodocket/112377585719844896

Buzzword bingo. I've never heard of the author, which suggests "thought leader" would be overblown. "Thought leader wannabe" seems fair.
