@cstross US elite consensus was not pro-apocalypse during the Reagan presidency; most evangelicals, never mind American Christians broadly constructed, did not believe that these are the end times and it wasn't anybody's policy to hasten those events. (One of Reagan's secretaries of the Interior was roundly mocked, even form the right, for an assertion that the world was going to end soon so restraint and conservation were unnecessary.)
@cstross bibi is part of the social circle of politicians and thinktankerati who brought us the Iraq war and its aftermath, and people somehow fail to realize that it's not an accident that the same thinking and behaviours are being repeated
@asayeed Bibi is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the US neoconservative movement … or vice versa: it's hard to tell which end is the tail and which is the head. I really hate to apply the word "evil" to a human being, but Bibi is one of the exceptions to that rule.
@cstross i don't think Biden has ever found a fascist he hasn't liked¹. maybe Putin... maybe. he's the kind of machiavellian that thinks he's outsmarting them with his 3rd-way magic. triangulation is a cult, right up there with tech optimism and whatever the fuck that cult behind AI is called. it's the Clintonian attempt at "kindler, gentler" fascist realpolitik. the older i get, the more i hate Bill Clinton for successfully selling fascism-lite to the masses.

Follow it all the way down and you run into a variant Russian Orthodox Christian heresy in the 19th century (which gave us the Space Settlers Society, the AI Singularity, and a whole lot more). It's a wild trip! (I climbed out of that rabbit warren about two decades ago and I can't believe people are still falling for it, but …)
