I don't get it why can't we download more storage? I mean sim cards are the size of microSD cards. If we can switch to e-sims to download our number why can't we do the same with storage? They're the same size. What's stopping us from doing this?

cloud storage is not this also this is a complete joke I very much understand why it's not possible but most people just read the beginning of the post instead of what's underneath. ​:cat:​

@shalien I mean sim cards don't even store your number. they store some misc things to access your number in the case of e-sim, they are literally just a very tiny "Smartcard" in the sense that 2G cards stored a secret that would then be verified by the phone company. sim cards also do not store the antenna or any of the cellular capabilities they just store a tiny amount of things that can only be accessed in certain proprietary ways depending on vendor, network etc. Upset that you found the "can't create storage from thin air" problematic but not the fact that I said sim cards store your number.

creating storage out of thin air is only partially true, while you can't increase the capacity of the physical device (changing things like sectors, sector size and yes i'm aware those are an abstract concept exposed by ssds) you can do various things to compact data before storage. there's things like varying levels of filesystem compression, which does not guarantee extra storage but if for instance you have thousands of gigabytes of text files something like zstd will be very effective at reducing that size. of course binary files are well binary files. I say partially true because you're just changing the way you are organizing the data, compacting it before storing it. you're not physically increasing the capacity it would be like changing the font size you use on your paper files before they go into the filing cabinet. you aren't physically increasing the space in the filing cabinet but you are increasing what it can store in terms of density per page, and that's not always actually possible because take an image you can't just take away the sheet of paper the image is on. you can't print it smaller (well you can https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microform) but it just requires more and more hardware, time effort to store and retrieve much like how compression requires more and more cpu power (or whatever chip it's offloaded to).

@shalien that's just for lossless compression, of course if you cut the papers in certain sizes acknowledging that some of that data will not be retrievable you can physically jam more paper in a filing cabinet. I mean I guess that supports your point regarding not creating it out of thin air... but to most people that seems a bit counterintuitive as they look at anything digital as magic or mystical. it's not "free" as it requires additional processing time to and from. I mean you could also just argue that microSD cards as a form factor are kinda stupid (they're really tiny! I mean they're cute but i find sd card slots much easier for my hands i drop microsd cards and they go missing lol). I can't believe we have managed to shove 1TB+ on microsd cards that is insane to me
