Bing outage shows just how little competition Google search really has

Opinion: Actively searching without Google or Bing is harder than it looks.

@arstechnica @Mojeek and Stract looks good but search results are really bad. searXNG is nice if you can self-host but none of the public instance looks trustworty. I'm currently using @brave search, results are good but they enable usage analytics or something by default, you can turn it off in preference but I'm always using browser private mode in Librewolf so it's annoying to turn it off every time and also companies relation with crypto stuff is somewhat shady

@triskelion @arstechnica @brave do you have examples of bad results for us?

triskelion,
@triskelion@floss.social avatar

@Mojeek @arstechnica @brave For example if you search "Serpent OS", you find result of an article as first result instead of the official website, official website is below and it contains referral link from ITS FOSS, wtf

@triskelion @arstechnica @brave the issue here seems to be that https://www.serpentos.com/ throws up an error instead of redirecting back to https://serpentos.com/; this has caused the home page itself to disappear from results.

We'll sort this out manually, if the redirect www to non-www happened automatically then it would have worked itself out 😀

@triskelion @arstechnica @brave should be all good now: https://www.mojeek.com/search?q=Serpent+OS thanks for pointing it out to us!

Colbycolby,

@arstechnica I tried Mojeek and SearXNG and got useful results from both

@arstechnica I know we'll only get corporate fluff from themselves but anyone know what happened to the web giants this time?

tizian,

@arstechnica Reading this article, I decided to give @Mojeek a long standing go; and just realised one can't even change the standard search engine in Brave Browser on Android to custom ones. Seems I'm also switching to Firefox.

Still need to keep Brave, though. No other browser is able to block all YouTube advertisements. :BlobhajShock:

@tizian @arstechnica the method is (weird but)

  1. do a search using the engine you want to add
  2. go to the search settings in the browser
  3. it has now magically appeared below the preset list

annoying but not impossible

tizian,

@Mojeek @arstechnica You are right! Did not know that.

Bot4Sale,

@arstechnica I've never used it but according to https://avoidthehack.com/best-private-search Brave search does not rely on Bing or Google for search results. It may have other issues however (ie. privacy issues)
