Omg the scholastic books! I used to order SO many of those as a kid growing up. Like thirty forty books a month, I wouldn’t be surprised if my mother worked in part to keep me in books.
(Just kidding she was a marine in the 60’s then actually divorced her first husband because he didn’t want her working or driving. She said women always needed to be able to take care of themselves, but she had a crazy, crazy life I’ve thought about writing a book on more than once.)
She had a life, was removed from her parents custody by her grandmother and the general, went to live with relatives running mines in Mexico and was raised with them and their adopted son for a while. Her entire generation was elected by the Vietnam war in different ways with one going on the memorial in DC. They are fairly certain they found his body after McCain helped open up Vietnam.
