On a train from Prague to Berlin after my 11th #EuroPython & my 🧠 is completely empty but my ❤️ is overflowing. Not only is it crucial for people who invest a lot of time in unpaid community work to have the opportunity to meet their users & readers & hear more than complaints. 🧵
Not only did I get to see close friends I’ve made over the past 12 years. Not only was the feedback to my talk phenomenal & lead to many great conversations about related topics—including fielding feedback to a project that I’ve soft-launched recently & nobody really "got" until now 👀. 🧵
Finally, at the pub garden event on Friday I got to talk to my compatriots in Czech, finding other expats, learning about being appreciated in the old homelands (& beyond: you made my night @sebastiaanzeeff & I will need a while to process all of this.
(the only downer was how my English speaking for 45 minutes took over my Czech brain and when giving up the stage, I translated “thank you very much” a bit too literally — I KNOW IT’S “moc” AND NOT “hodně”. 🙈)
It was also the first time since I’ve started public speaking 10 years ago, I was allowed to speak at my birthplace that I had to leave more than 35 years ago and you can actually see me fighting tears while saying so at the beginning. 🧵
