Featured Story: Timothy Murray, the 11-year-old honor student who spent 3 days in solitary after his arrest at the orders of the principal, is still awaiting hearing to determine whether charges proceed against him. https://www.texasobserver.org/why-was-this-11-year-old-honor-roll-student-put-in-solitary/
(Correction: Timothy's hearing is December 13, not November 13 as originally reported. We apologize for the error. We will continue to investigate this troubling story.)

@TexasObserver Wow. I stood up to an authoritarian teacher when I was ten and actually had to quote AZ territorial law to tell her she couldn't stop me from getting a drink after she blew the whistle to end recess.

Solidarity with this young man, all the way.

@phil_stevens As a former kid who stood up to unreasonable teachers more than once, this kid touches my heart too, and I think all of us at TXO —Kit

@TexasObserver @phil_stevens Same. Never stop standing up when someone abuses their authority. It just give them license to do more of the same.

@TexasObserver This is a tragedy! This poor child lost his father then he's thrown in jail, for what? Absolutely disgraceful, illegal behavior by the school and by law enforcement.

To all the people chastising us Texans for living here:

First off, voter suppression and gerrymandering and redistricting are why we have such shit politicians. Population-wise, we're actually more blue than red. That's why you see KEEP TEXAS RED billboards on I-35.

Secondly, I'm on disability. I would move back to New Orleans yesterday if I could. I can't. Poverty has a lot of us stuck here.

Thirdly, if a majority of the good people leave, that leaves the rest of us to the whims of fascist fucks who are armed to the teeth and hate anyone not white, cishet, Christian, and capitalist.

Good people are not responsible for the shitfuckery of my state. I'M not responsible for the shitfuckery of my state.

Trust me, if I had half a chance, I would shove Greg Abbott down a really long and tall set of stairs strapped into his wheelchair

VirginiaHolloway,

@CosmicTrigger @TexasObserver Thank you for this post. I’ve lived in the Northeast most of my life and sometimes - like when Texans put a 12 year old in solitary confinement for asking exactly the sort of questions I asked when I was 12 - I say “WTF, how can any decent person live in Texas?” But I know it’s more complicated than that. You put the meat on those bones.

Checking back for updates and follow-ups!
We want justice for Timothy and Myrta Garza should not be allowed to work with children!

In 1999 near Dallas, our daughter in grade 7 got cross-wise with a principal over something trivial. Similar story to this. That guy ties for first place with the worst jerks I have ever known. We left Texas within the year for NY.

Too bad to see Texas just as bad or worse. How can reasonable people live there?

A perfect description of the police in this story.

When there was a true threat, the shooter in the neighboring town off Uvalde, they stood petrified while kids died.

But some adult with a chip on her shoulder gets mad at a kid for talking to her manager & repeats (or creates) a rumor to the police... They can't even be bothered to do a proper investigation before terrorizing and traumatizing a child.

Police have proven that they will never be reformed

@TexasObserver that principal is like some grotesque Roald Dahl villain. In the picture they included, it looks like it's causing her physical pain to smile.

<<“Timothy’s doing better. But he no longer feels safe to speak up when he needs something,” Rincon said.>>

I believe that was the intended result of these actions.

The pettiness of adults with a measure of power + privilege in US school systems sacrifices more BIPOC + poor white children for the school-to-prison pipeline.

@TexasObserver holy crap Texas is broken

ReginaB,

@TexasObserver This is beyond words, distressing. It is a precursor to a police state that could evolve in this country if fascist people take up the government. We’re seeing it happen little by little on the local level that will soon become national. time to stand up is now we must stand in solidarity with Timothy and other kids, like him being caught up in the system. Way too many of our young people are being arrested at school, handcuffed and sometimes beaten and there is a school to prison pipeline. I am glad Timothy is in a better place with adults who are looking out for him

@TexasObserver

Glad this 11-year old, who seems to be incredibly smart, is going to have his law school or medical school paid for by the tax payers of Brownsville. Well-deserved. I hope the attorney who takes this case keeps that in mind when charging his fees.
