- revisiting early santana for the first time in eons at the behest of a (drummer) pal who suggested trying to background carlos & focus on the next-level collectivity of this specific group of players. and, like, shit yeah! it's probably just stating the obvious to say that santana were an incredible band, but it made them feel fresh to me. @vinylrecords

I touched that record yesterday digging back to the Stevie Wonder for my grandson. Lots of good memories there.

- pretty much the end of the line for the original band & more variations on the carlos santana secret chord progression. real question, though: is "caravanserai" the vibiest santana album? @vinylrecords

@bourgwick @vinylrecords I'd say the original (and best) version of the band is on the Fillmore 1968 album. Doc Livingstone on drums, Marcus Malone on congas, David Brown on bass.

@bourgwick @vinylrecords this or Lotus. Caravanserai will always be tied to Blues For Allah in my mind, perhaps somewhat because I got them both on CD at the same time, but there's a similar lush mid seventies quality to the production on both, and the music is a similar balance flowing and intricate.

@bourgwick @vinylrecords Psssst... Don't tell any squares, but the secret chord progression is ||: Gm7 C :|| ...

@bourgwick @vinylrecords the only Santana record I care to listen to again and again

@bourgwick @vinylrecords if you haven't heard Santana's Live at the Fillmore release (1968) that's "the one"

@bourgwick @vinylrecords yeah great observation - I think that carries through the Lotus/Caravanserai era and then it loses that ensemble quality in favor of being a star vehicle.

I think the collective vibe is visually evident in this early stage layout: Carlos is in the middle, but surrounded by drums, with congas front and center. Imagine what it must've sounded like where he's standing!

SourceRolls,

@mrcompletely @vinylrecords @bourgwick now I’m wondering where Carlos stood during the Love Devotion Surrender sessions 🤔

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@SourceRolls @vinylrecords @bourgwick wherever John suggested, most likely
