IIRC a large enough portion are also prisoners that get pardoned if they help with the war effort. (obviously can't run away/desert though.)

robotPerson, Historically wagner is Putin's personal army, so I believe that this move is just to make skapegoats from Shoigu and the others from their national army.
So I believe that a loss for wagner's troops would mean Putin's arrest and the beginning of russian reconstruction, and that would be cool.
Also, the russian national forces have more legitimacy to rebuild Russia whitout Putin and also to not descend into total chaos.
