Mid November, time once again to remind our Friends, Family & Followers that is the way to avoid harmful . Let's repeat: Don't Fall for the Surveillance Tech Trap: learn How To Buy a Freedom-Respecting Gadget. Seek out a Good Gadget Giving Guide. Let's reach out to the uninitiated: where should someone begin who isn't already immersed in Freedom Tech? I'll try to put out something. Can you too join the movement, maybe post your own recommendations, write a short article, a round-up of the issues and the alternatives that respect our freedom, link to existing guides? Who's in?

The bar for claiming your device will replace the smartphone is almost insurmountably high. Smartphones are devices that everyone uses everywhere all the time.

I remember visiting Nigeria years ago and seeing goat herders with smartphones. There are 5.25 billion smartphone users today

You can use them in almost any social situation often while doing other things like eating a meal or watching TV.

Battery life is means you can use them all day.

Can AI pins beat that?

I have this feeling that what these devices do better is steer us into 10x faster.

A near-future world where everyone is filming everyone all the time and wearing always-on spatial microphone systems is the stuff of turned to sheer horror for me. The thought of everyone connected to milk machines in the cloud. Mobile phones are already bad enough.

I coined the term upon finding this "Humane" pin.

⚠️ alert!

☠️ Gadgeteering

is derived from and applies to tech companies that introduce highly -invasive devices into our world. Cashing in and be damned.

A is also the naive or careless person who wears these and is either oblivious of the detrimental externalities of the tech to society, or criminally negligent of those (usually -following hipsters).

Gadgeteers lead us to .

Yes, is a sound, derogatory term.

We are starting to think the best device we can own is simply something to detect the nasty proprietary, non-FOS devices nearby. It might flash and say, "DANGER: <NAME_OF_PROPRIETARY_DEVICE>.

Here's the creepy product (and discussion) that spurred this:

Expect wave upon wave of these #gadgeteer #IoT and #wearables devices to follow.

I introduced the term #Gadgeteering with some background info to #LinkedIn as well. LinkedIn is a #SocialMedia hellhole that is filled to the brim with overexcited #Gadgeteers.

So .. who's in for some fun -storming to introduce to the broader public for awareness and to name and shame some of the worst perpetrators?

Let's boost all those toots through this still humane cyberspace of ours 🚀

May your memes be nudge people and be shining beacons to help ponder better futures.

Sure! Do introduce fitting hashtags to go along with them :blobaww:

I disagree. It is a vague term, non-descriptive. serves to bend an existing word towards a new meaning to help raise aware that things aren't all just bling bling with these 'smart' .

Hallo @waag 👋

Vanmorgen ben ik attent gemaakt op een gadget met de newspeak naam "Humane", waarbij de rillingen over mijn rug lopen. Beetje aan het discussiëren op de thread:

https://social.coop/@smallcircles/111390519661573477

@waag

Zojuist als een 'showerthought' de term gedefinieerd, wat een goed woord kan zijn om mensen bewust te maken van hun gedacheloze gebruik van gadgets, alsmede om techbedrijven mee te 'namen en shamen'.
