"It would be nice if they sounded good, but there’s even a charm in the way that they don’t sound good, sometimes.”

Gig Review: The Leo Green Orchestra perform The Rolling Stones at the London Palladium
https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2024/02/gig-review-the-leo-green-orchestra-perform-the-rolling-stones-at-london-palladium/

Poster for the gig.

For the first time in its illustrious 114 year history, the historic London Palladium will host a monthly orchestral residency beginning in February 2024, which will see iconic artists’ music celebrated.

This was an entertaining, but curious, gig. It isn't a tribute act - no sequinned sound-alikes strutting the stage here - it's a a full rock-n-roll orchestra fronted by three dazzlingly talented female vocalists. They blasted out hit after hit - knowing that the audience is probably unlikely to remember an obscure B-Side from a 1968 single.

The songs are played with joy and panache. The singers are outstanding - filling the Palladium with their roar. There are really only two problems.

First, is the audience. I know it's fun to rag on Boomers - but the event staff were constantly dashing around telling the oldies that they weren't allowed to record the gig on their phones. The youth of today, eh?

Secondly, as delightful as it was to have Cerys Matthews as a host, it seemed a bit of a waste to have her merely recite Wikipedia trivia for each song. She did her best to get the audience motivated - but I think it was a bit too late on a Sunday for the Boomers.

The residency continues with music from Bowie, The Bee Gees, and Phil Collins.

: "Rise in vinyl sales at concerts gives indie artists a vital lifeline

Musicians are finding that selling their records at gigs is no longer an afterthought, but is providing a crucial revenue stream

As soon as Roxanne de Bastion comes off stage, there is one thing on her mind – getting down to run her merchandise stall.

“The quicker the better – sometimes it feels a bit like those scenes in Spinal Tap, rushing down corridors to find how to get there,” said the singer-songwriter, whose latest album was produced by the former Suede guitarist, Bernard Butler. On a recent tour, selling copies of You & Me, We Are the Same afterwards “was the difference between making a loss and being able to pay my rent for three months”.

Selling vinyl and merchandise at gigs is no longer an afterthought for artists – sales there are starting to rival more traditional methods. About half of De Bastion’s annual income from music sales comes from selling vinyl at gigs, while most of the rest comes directly via her website. Her experience is shared by most artists not selling out arenas."

: "Rapper Travis Scott’s most recent album, UTOPIA, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. Two of his songs have two billion plays on Spotify. He is, by any measure, one of the most popular rappers in the world. So maybe it’s not surprising that tickets for his upcoming tour sold out. Check StubHub right now, though, and you can find thousands of tickets to “sold out” shows in many cities for between $10 and $20, far below the face value for his cheapest tickets at $61.50 before fees when they first went on sale.

In ticket reseller lingo, Scott’s tour is a “bloodbath,” the result of overzealous brokers and noobs “overbuying” tickets based on a miscalculation of the likely value of his tickets on the secondary market. Many brokers now stand to lose a lot of money on Scott’s shows. At least part of this buying frenzy was fueled by a bet placed by PFS Buyers Club, a credit card maxing site I wrote about earlier this week that has recently pivoted from buying rare coins to buying concert tickets. PFS told its members to buy as many tickets to Scott’s shows as possible, according to emails viewed by 404 Media. PFS itself stands to lose more than $1 million on Travis Scott alone when all is said and done, it told members."

: "Members of an organized “Buyer’s Club” are buying Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift Eras Tour concert tickets for ticket resellers only to maximize their credit card points, 404 Media has learned. The practice shows how ticket resellers leverage the credit card point maximizing community to create a human ticket-buying botnet allowing them yet another way to bypass Ticketmaster’s ticket-buying limits and hoard tickets to resell at high prices while regular fans get left in the dust."

Also, don't yank on the microphone stand to adjust it to your height. That will wear it out and eventually it won't work at all. The twisty knobs are there for a reason.
