European folks: Serdashop now has #PicoGUS in stock! Ships from Belgium which should save you shipping cost, time, and import duty. He also lets you bundle one of his awesome wavetable synth modules that can plug right onto the connector on the PicoGUS. https://www.serdashop.com/PicoGUS
I also raised my price by $10. Part of that is to cool demand on the crazy rush of orders when I restock due to the massive waitlist, but another part is because this batch was the biggest one yet and I can’t fly under the radar of US customs any more. Most of the card’s components are subject to the 25% tariff on goods from China and that takes a huge bite out so unfortunately I’m passing that along. #PicoGUS
@foone and @h0ffman get shoutouts for inspiration in the article. And big thanks to @ishotjr for editing and sheperding my way, and @inversephase for making the all important social connection. 😁 #PicoGUS#demoscene
So I just discovered that someone that is not me registered picogus.com. That is VERY much not cool. It currently redirects to the official site (https://polpo.org/picogus) but who knows what they can change that to in the future. I thought about registering it but guess whoever it is beat me to it. #PicoGUS
Bought a motherboard to use with the #PicoGUS sound card - a
QDI P5I430VX V3.0 Socket 7. I lived and loved the era of PC gaming where a motherboard like this would have been something I owned. I should have never gotten rid of anything. :)
Looks like it needs RAM, a hard drive and a power supply, but that is all doable, and the RAM might be somewhere in the house already. More info on the PicoGUS here! https://polpo.org/picogus/
We now have WiFi on the #PicoGUS emulating an ne2000 card! yyzkevin (who did the SB DSP work released a while ago) was responsible for this with a bit of help from me between days here at #VCFEast. Awesome!
I'll be at #VCFEast in a couple days and I'm stoked! I'll be bringing #PicoGUS 2.0 boards to sell there, so if you've been wanting one and you'll be there, it'll be your best chance to get one.
After seeing @paulrickards's post about being at #VCFEast I just realized I can consign items. So I've just added a decent number of #PicoGUS cards to consignment.
The new #Pocket386 is keeping it real with the #PicoGUS Femto! It plugged right in and was ready to rock right away. Playing Keep it Real by Soda7, the massive track from the Deep Meet Amiga demo released at Revision 2024
Kevin Moonlight just released a video demonstrating his Pi Pico-based PCMCIA card that can emulate NE2000 over Wi-Fi, serial port, and Sound Blaster for retro laptops, handhelds, and other computers. He's gauging interest in the project for a future build, so if you're interested in one there's a link in the description to a form.
Kevin is great, he was responsible for the bulk of the SoundBlaster DSP support that was just released on #PicoGUS! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoJ12leojwo #retrocomputing#pcmcia
This release fixes a tricky hardware bug that affects ~10% of PCM510xA DAC chips that results in silent audio at 22.05kHz sampling rate.
It also adds an experimental mode that runs the GUS emulation at fixed 44.1kHz, similar to an Interwave (experimental because it's not perfect in all titles – for example it stutters in Doom).
Tonight I’m looking at #PicoGUS boards that failed my initial QA. This chip in the center had bent legs, preventing it from being soldered correctly. You can see how much higher up it is compared to the others around it.
Some people have wondered why the #PicoGUS is as tall as it is and here’s why: to fit big boi wavetable cards like this one. It’s also why there are holes for mounting standoffs.
New video:
Ian Scott, also known as polpo, has upgraded his Raspberry Pico based Gravis Ultrasound clone to version 2.0. It can now be fully factory assembled, and has WaveBlaster support as well as a new design. Let’s test drive the card and see what it can do!
Coming soon to #PicoGUS: Sound Blaster support. Massive thanks to yyzkevin for writing and contributing the SB DSP and mixing code! Now you'll be able to play Doom with FM synth + SB sound effects, or play earlier SB games that don't support the GUS.
#PicoGUS currently doesn't work on the IBM 5170 and this really bugs me because I first used a GUS on a 5170 back in the day! So today I'm going to try to figure out why it doesn't work. I have the logic analyzer hooked to the ISA bus so I can get some bus captures while the PicoGUS tries to play some Adlib music...
