12/05/2024 - a visit to Balnuaran of Clava today.

Morning visit on the way somewhere. If you like your stones standing, they have plenty in circles round the big cairns. This place is wow and one of my favourite megalithic sites.

A big rectangular stone. Part of a circle round one of the cairns. Nice trees surrounding the area.

Last stone standing in Pen-y-Beacon (Hay Bluff) stone circle for today's .

Rather forlorn next to a parking area now (although it does sometimes have its own ice-cream van), the circle stands at the foot of Pen-y-Beacon/Hay Bluff in the Black Mountains. It has great views all the way to Y Mynydd Ddu on a clear day.

This visit April 2010 on a walk from Talgarth to Hay-on-Wye along the northern summit of the Black Mountains.

Back to 2009 for today's and a trip to the lovely island of North Uist in the Western Isles.

Pobuill Fhinn Stone Circle is such a nice circle in a wonderful location. Eabhal [Eaval] is in the background of the photo, my favourite hill round here.

A terrific stone circle in Dartmoor's inner space for today's - White Moor (sometimes called Little Hound Tor) stone circle, a spacious ring with a 6 foot outlier.

In the stones are a huntsman and his hounds, turned to stone for hunting on the Sabbath (makes a change from the usual 'dancing on the Sabbath' tales).

Visited on a scorching hot and thankfully dry underfoot St George's Day, April 2011.

Time travel back to 2016 and a trip to the North York Moors for today's

Commondale Stone Circle hides in plain view in open moorland. About 18 small stones, most only about 1ft tall. It's easy to miss but well worth finding. A lovely place to sit and spend time at on a sunny day.

A visit to Shropshire's 'other' stone circle for today's

Close to Mitchell's Fold, near the Welsh border, this is Hoarstones. It sits in an often boggy area, off the higher ground of Stapeley Hill and the Stiperstones ridge. The circle is little-frequented and many of the stones are fallen. It has a fine view towards Corndon Hill, a prominent summit with many Bronze Age cairns.

This visit on a glorious sunny day in April 2011.

A single standing stone of gritstone, with a curved, tapering top which comes to a point. It's no more than a metre tall above ground. The top is covered in bright yellow lichen. Reedy grass grows all around the base of the stone, almost hiding it. The sky is an intense, bright blue.

Off to the land of the recumbent stone circle for today's photo. A sunny visit to New Craig Stone Circle, 12 years back now. Time moves too quickly. The 2 flankers and recumbent stone are pretty wonderful.

If you like a RSC, the Gazetteer for the wonderful book “Great Crowns of Stone; The Recumbent Stone Circles of Scotland” is really worth a download and look through.

Oof! I might have overdone it a little bit today. I’ve had low energy levels these last couple of days so thought I’d go for a 12.5 mile hike on the moor 🤔. Felt further with the sodden peat sucking at my boots every step.

Lovely in the sunshine though with the sound of skylarks, stone chats and meadow pipits. Several stone circles and stone rows to investigate.

Then the ‘weather’ came in, and it became quite a slog back. Found me a quaking mire which was fun!

Photo of a stone clapper bridge - a long flat slab of granite balanced on three ‘pillars’ of granite boulders, the stone a patchwork of pale lichens - spanning a Dartmoor river. The water is peaty brown and flowing fast after endless rain. The land either side is green brown with rough grasses and shorter, more vibrant grass on the banks, and a few scattered gorse bushes and small deciduous trees. There is a dark forest plantation on the skyline on the left. Bare hills into the distance on the left. The sky is blue with white clouds.
Photo of a Dartmoor river tumbling over boulders down a valley. The peaty water rushes creamy-white over a small waterfall. A cluster of hawthorn tree cling to the bank, in the centre of the frame. The steep valley sides are strewn with boulders, green grass short, nibbled by sheep. A few clumps of longer, dark green marshland grass. The sky is cloudy but with chinks of blue.
Photo of dark brown moorland in the foreground, rough tussocky grass. The view of hills is obscured by low grey rain clouds sweeping in towards the camera. The sun makes a valiant, albeit failed, attempt to break through in the top right of the frame.

Wonderful Drombeg stone circle for from a visit in 2019.

The most famous of all Irish recumbent stone circles. It meant a lot to finally make it here all the way from Aberdeenshire - the land of the RSC. Just a brilliant circle. A magic day. As happy as a spaceways gets.

A black and white world for today's .

Aviemore 'Clava' cairn; the remains of a kerbed cairn (which likely had a central mound and chamber), surrounded by a free-standing stone circle. It's in a neat little suburban setting now, with glimpses of the Cairngorm mountains beyond.

This visit March 2011.

Walking in a winter wonderland to today's offering.

Torbreck stone circle near Inverness, a lovely little ring of shapely stones, graded in size. Visited after a heavy snowfall the day before, with sleet for company.

The circle is a bit trashed, but the exquisite backdrop of Y Mynydd Du's escarpment more than makes up for it.
