12/05/2024 - a visit to Balnuaran of Clava today.

Morning visit on the way somewhere. If you like your stones standing, they have plenty in circles round the big cairns. This place is wow and one of my favourite megalithic sites.

A big rectangular stone. Part of a circle round one of the cairns. Nice trees surrounding the area.

A fine Pictish Symbol Stone for

Nice start to our day at Brodie castle yesterday, the stone stands near the entrance. The carvings are in great condition. A cross on one side. The other side a pictish beast, two paired sea monsters and a double-disc and Z-rod.

Best though is carved along three corners - the longest Ogham inscription known in Scotland. Only between 30-40 ogham stones have been found in Scotland, these are pretty rare. Got to love a bit of ogham.

One cross is carved on the other side of the stone
Close up of part of the Ogham inscription along the side of the stone. Ogham is an Early Medieval alphabet (4thโ€“10th centuries). A series of lines carved across the stone.

There's a nice blog if anyone's interested about Ogham in Scotland. Ogham is an Early Medieval alphabet sometimes called Celtic tree alphabet.

Back to 2009 for today's and a trip to the lovely island of North Uist in the Western Isles.

Pobuill Fhinn Stone Circle is such a nice circle in a wonderful location. Eabhal [Eaval] is in the background of the photo, my favourite hill round here.

A 2023 trip to Unst in the Shetland Islands for

I'd wanted to visit this stone with a while. It looked big at first sight, up close it seemed massive. Standing all alone in the open landscape, it seemed at peace. It's the most northerly standing stone I've been to and one of my favourites. A 12ft loveable monster.

Bonus photo from yesterday's walk. Bristly haircap moss I think from right near the top of the hill (about 720m). The colours were just lovely on this one.

21/04/2024 - A Sunday stroll to the bottle bank to get rid of the evidence. On the way back we started looking at tiny things. A 20 min walk turned into 7 hrs. Peaceful, slow and even the rain held off. A good day.

My new favourite tiny thing - Common Liverwort. This stuff is fantastic. Like something out of a 50s sci-fi film.

Two close up photos - Reproductive structures known as gametophores. Male gametophores on left, female gametophores right.

Female gametophores structures, topped with a light green umbrella on the stalk.

21/04/2024 - Like our new friend who we met on our travels today, a Copse snail, we took the day slow.

I was just reading a bit about them, Most snails in the UK only live up to 2 years but this snail can live up to 14 years.

With all that extra time you would think it would travel far and wide but it's said it doesn't cover more than 25 metres in its entire life! An easy pleased snail, nothing wrong with that.

Time travel back to 2016 and a trip to the North York Moors for today's

Commondale Stone Circle hides in plain view in open moorland. About 18 small stones, most only about 1ft tall. It's easy to miss but well worth finding. A lovely place to sit and spend time at on a sunny day.

19/04/2024 - End of the working week at last and the start of a long weekend off for us. A nice Friday evening visit to Bennachie. We took forever going up as we were looking at mosses, it's everywhere and some lovely ones to find. We had tea on top. Didn't stay as long as normal as the cold was getting to me tonight. The wind chill was below zero. The sunset was very nice. A good trip.

One of us plodding up Little Oxen Craig. A big old lump of rock.
Oxen Craig, the high point of Bennachie. Evening light was nice. Golden on the heather and stones.
Low sun starting to set behind Tap o' Noth. The sky is orange.

12/04/2024 - A sunny visit to Leith Hall. The 17th century big house has an interesting history and is well worth a walk around. The gardens are lovely. Early spring flowers and great trees. We found a bench to sit and have our lunch. The warmth of the sun felt good. A fine day out taken slow.

Acorns in my hand. I don't know what type of oak they are from. Answers on a postcard please.
One of two Pictish symbol stones situated at the entrance to the gardens. This one has a carved wolf on it.

A trip back to 2013 and Caithness for today's

Sometimes you come across a big lump of a standing stone, a little bit in the middle of nowhere, and you just have to give it a hug.

Off to the land of the recumbent stone circle for today's photo. A sunny visit to New Craig Stone Circle, 12 years back now. Time moves too quickly. The 2 flankers and recumbent stone are pretty wonderful.

If you like a RSC, the Gazetteer for the wonderful book โ€œGreat Crowns of Stone; The Recumbent Stone Circles of Scotlandโ€ is really worth a download and look through.

This lovely standing stone behind the old kirk is said to be a meeting place for the fairy folk. It's a gateway to the big hills beyond.

13/03/2024 - Evening visit to Bennachie. At last a sunny day after days of grey skies. As soon as the whistle blew for home time, we downed tools and headed out for the hill. The legs were in need of a bit of up. We had tea on top, tucked behind the cairn, away from the wind. The sky soon turned dark and the stars came out. Jupiter was having a good chat with the small waxing crescent of moon nearby. I love evenings like this. Peaceful.

One of us in twilight at the top of Bennachie. Below a crescent moon. Clear sky at the moment.
Photo from our tea spot, looking north to rural Aberdeenshire. One of the many signposts is in view. They like their signposts on this hill!
Getting dark now. View over the cairn to Jupiter and the moon.

Wonderful Drombeg stone circle for from a visit in 2019.

The most famous of all Irish recumbent stone circles. It meant a lot to finally make it here all the way from Aberdeenshire - the land of the RSC. Just a brilliant circle. A magic day. As happy as a spaceways gets.
