We just expanded the section in our #SubduedSocial server rules to conform to the #IFTAS guidelines against targeted misgendering and deadnaming in the fediverse.
We're getting lots of spammers signing up for accounts on #SubduedSocial (like with a lot of other small servers on the fediverse in the last day or so).
So I deactivated open registrations on our server. Now all signups will need to be approved by an admin.
Here's an interesting approach to dealing with #Threads. We will be looking at this as an option for the #SubduedSocial server. If anyone else on our server has strong opinions about how to handle federating with #ThreadsApp, please let me know!
Our instance is now running Mastodon version 4.2 which means that you can opt-in to make your profile and your posts searchable by the wider fediverse. If you'd like to opt-in, you need to visit this page https://subdued.social/settings/privacy and check one or both boxes to "Include public posts in search results" and "Include profile page in search engines".
I just added #SubduedSocial to the instance pickers at instances.social (@instances), mastodonservers.net, joinfediverse.wiki, masto.town, and I submitted a request for us to be added to the #regional list on joinmastodon.org. I hope more #local#BellinghamWA and #Whatcom people find us! I'm very optimistic about the potential for Mastodon for local conversations, and I hope we can provide a good home for people migrating here from the Bellingham subreddit. #RedditMigration
As we get @BellinghamWA up and going, does anyone want to contribute an iconic #Bellingham image to serve as the avatar or the banner for the group? #BellinghammWA
I just calculated everything we paid for #SubduedSocial hosting & domain registration this year so far, and our donation rate is looking good enough to cover costs with a bit of safety margin. So I went ahead and made a voluntary #LandTax donation to the Lhaq'temish Foundation equivalent to 10% of our hosting costs. I haven't found a way to do recurring donations to them or any other local native nonprofit, so I'll just do it periodically by hand. https://nativegov.org/news/voluntary-land-taxes/https://www.lhaqtemish.org/
#HappyThanksgiving everyone in #BellinghamWA and in particular on our #SubduedSocial Mastodon instance. In recognition that we live on the ancestral lands of our neighbors the #Lummi, #Nooksack, and other #CoastSalish peoples, I made another voluntary #LandTax donation to the Lhaq'temish Foundation equivalent to 10% of our hosting costs and domain registration fees over the past 6 months.
