The Vancouver International Film Festival #VIFF#VIFF2023 came and went and I got a 10-pack of tickets. Here's a review thread of the films I saw. It's often a gamble at these festivals because most films haven't been reviewed widely yet or even have proper trailers. Nonetheless I was lucky that I didn't end up seeing any complete stinkers, although some were better than others: #film#MovieReviews
Saw this at #VIFF last night, I have to admit from the trailer I wasn't sure if it'd be too slow and boring but it wasn't, it was great. Probably my #2 film so far at the fest. It weaves in literary, operatic and cinematic references to someone's memories of experiencing the 13 May Incident, a race riot that happened in Kuala Lumpur in 1969, and then her life in 2018 traveling to visit the mass grave site where she thinks her relatives may be buried. #Malaysia#film https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5BILTQcjTs
I had sent it to a Malaysian friend from grad school who still lives here but he never replied, but after the film I bumped into him while leaving and we took the skytrain together. I had forgotten that he had actually written his thesis specifically about the 1969 violence, although not about the specific place shown in the film (Majestic theatre). He was also impressed, especially by the level of care and detail in the sets of the 1969 parts, and the oblique way the story is told. #VIFF
Signals is an interactive exhibit showcasing creative technologies running as part of the Vancouver International Film Festival beginning Oct. 1.
A special feature of Signals is the Na wa shéw̓ay̓ta sp'en̓ém (the seed is growing) section, which includes about 20 short films produced in the world’s first-ever Indigenous video production training program from IM4 Lab Indigenous Virtual Production Films.
