Accusations of plagiarism have become the latest weapon in the culture wars, wielded for political purposes rather than because of a commitment to academic integrity. Vox's Constance Grady unpacks what the term means, and why technology has made everything more complicated. "New tools are available to both good-faith and bad-faith actors, and that means we are at the beginning of a very messy new era indeed," she says.
"When asked whether they would discipline students (or, I suppose, faculty) if they called for the genocide of Jews, each president responded that the answer depends on the context of the utterances."
Re #ClaudineGay, the presidency at an educational institution should be about academic principles/excellence. She was perfect in the hearing on that front imo (after failing to defend conservative voices for years). The job should not be about being the best academic, as plenty of geniuses would make terrible admins etc. It also shouldn't be about fundraising/politics as it is now, cause that may lead to compromises re the pursuit of "truth". She should have lost her faculty position instead.
"Boards of trustees like the Harvard Corporation are packed with wealthy donors. They’re not supposed to have any say over the day-to-day operations of the universities they oversee, although they routinely veto candidates for university presidents harboring views they find offensive."
@wdlindsy@hamishb PBS Newshour had a good conversation about Mrs Gay on tonights news broadcast.
Hint: those who made complaints about her called her WOKE. With suspicions of MAGA people wanting to oust normal people from such institutions to put in MAGA approved ones. #Harvard#ClaudineGay https://youtu.be/B3mVRxjtC-8
