4 from Don Siegel. Clint Eastwood and three other convicts plot to escape from Alcatraz. I doubt whether the real characters were so likeable - you didn't get sent to The Rock for being a pussycat - but this film has you rooting for them right from the first long, wordless, opening sequence. You won't want to hit Pause unless major surgery is required.

Michael Mann Week. James Caan's favourite performance - as a professional safe cracker - who thinks he's finally got everything he ever wanted in life, only to realise he's in with the Chicago Mob and they have no intention of ever letting him go. (And if you don't like crime movies, there's always the wonderful Tangerine Dream score.)

Bloody, scathing, deliriously over-the-top satire of late 80s capitalism. (And also unexpectedly touching.) If this doesn't quite make my Top 10, it's definitely in my Top 20. I love this film.
