2024 marks the 45th anniversary of sci-fi horror masterpiece Alien, which was released May 25, 1979.
The first time I saw it I was pretty young, it was on TV and censored. We actually had it recorded on a VHS from TV, which is something my family did a lot. I only saw the full uncensored version years later! 😂
Today (March 2) in 1933, the original King Kong premiered in theaters.
That's over NINE decades of the KING! And he's more popular now than ever. There was recently an animated series, a video game, a new comic series is coming out, another TV series is on the way, there's the toys, and of course Godzilla x Kong premieres at the end of this month.
Long live King Kong, the Eighth Wonder of the World. May he reign forever 👑 🦍
Decided I want to start watching more old #movies - think stuff from prior to, say, 1970 - and I’m not sure where to start.
Old Hollywood, classic monster movies, B-movies from the early days, black and white or color, pretty much anything except Westerns - what are your favorite old movies? I’ll add them to my list!
Now that the “1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die” series has ended indefinitely, I’m switching over to “They Shoot Pictures Don’t They?” Not finding a primary discussion board for it, though, other than maybe Letterboxd.
10 out of 10. No notes. Asthmatic, psycho-esque murderer terrorizes a beautiful, blonde bank teller. (Special mention: Stephanie Powers as the younger sister).
I am highly educated and well travelled. I know that I am extremely lucky to enjoy both of these privileges - but I also recognize how hard my grandparents and parents worked for them. I stand on their shoulders.
My world view is informed by my grandparents being #Holocaust survivors and my own direct experience of 9/11.
It is also informed by my clinical experience, as well as observing complex disability.
My political views are traditionally centre-left but - over the past few years - I have realised that the Left no longer reflects my values and I do not recognize what the Left is any more.
However, the Right does not reflect my values either.
I post views and musings and articles that may or may not resonate with you.
If they do, that's great.
If they do not, that's fine too.
I am not going to engage in arguments and I am not going to hesitate to Mute people who are clearly looking to troll or fight.
Reactions to Corridor of Mirrors (1948), which I watched at the end of last week.
I wonder if this film could be read as about the tension between… I don’t know, Romanticism and formalism, neo-classicism. An ex-painter in an empty mansion, desperate to recapture the past (and a mythical love from another age).
And lots of mirrors, bodies, malingering, beautiful spaces with hidden layers.
A reminder, in the ongoing WGA/SAG-AFTRA strike... Without the talented artists & craftspeople who make movies & shows, there won't be any future original classics, just A.I. ripping off and regurgitating things an algorithm deems popular. How would it know? It hasn't any real friends.
A favourite film a day for 365 days.
Parachuteless WW2 pilot jumps to what he expects will be his death, only to find he's survived the fall - due to an administrative cock-up in Heaven. Which now wants him back. Everything on Earth plays out in eyeball-popping Technicolor; everything in Heaven in vivid Black&White. The whole film is an endlessly entertaining box of delights and wonders.
I want to know who the parents are who'd give a 5 year old a Lon Chaney Phantom of the Opera figure, but I also want to be the 5 year old who gets a Lon Chaney Phantom of the Opera figure for their parents. #toys#SideShowCollectibles#horror#ClassicMovies#cinema#film
