I may have found the cause of why the Sharkey/Misskey server was running out of space, but let's see if the fix actually works before declaring as such.
Currently investigating degraded networking performance on our server since 5 PM . I spent the last few hours figuring out the cause, and I came to the conclusion that it's not on our side.
I filed a ticket, so hopefully it will get sorted out.
Sakurajima Social server had to be restarted as the server backend inaccessible since 5 AM today. I need to investigate what caused the server to suddenly become inaccessible early this morning. The server should be back up and I will be monitoring it.
Note that there are backups on this server if we had to restore from backup.
On the bright side, the XCP-ng updates are now fully applied as I had patches to install and some requiring a restart. I restarted the host server in trying to figure out if it would fix it. It didn't since it was a network issue.
When IceShrimp .Net enters beta, we will have a third backup fediverse server separate from the main one (hosted completely in a different location, but it will be only be used by staff), which will give an alternate channel in case of emergencies.
We will eventually explore the possibly of making our services redundant when we plan to move to our own servers (hardware) colocated somewhere in the distant future But that will be for another day.
We are transparent with backups and backup admins. Note that all data is backed up every day in two different locations, so you can be rest assured that we will get back up one way or another.
I had a panic attack when the server went down. Note that this appeared to be a network at probably affected the datacenter as I had difficulty accessing the support page.
Rest assured, the data is safe. The whole VM is backed up every day at midnight, so if anything were to go wrong, I will be able to restore it on a new server.
Still, while this may be a one off thing as this is the first time happening.
Note: The new chat server has nothing to do with the DDoS attack as it's hosted on an entirely different server. The hypervisor only hosts the Mastodon, Sharkey, and associated services related to them only, nothing else.
It's almost 2 months since we moved our servers at Sakurajima to a dedicated host. So far, it held up without a hitch and of course, we have more exciting things in the works for Sakurajima.
You can learn how our transition went and how you can support us in this post:
With that, if you have started on a big server like Mastodon Social, trust us. The experience will be better here as you get a local timeline with mostly anime/manga/Japanese related content. Hopefully we get a Bubble timeline feature added to Mastodon in the near future, as this feature is still in development.
Sakurajima Social Only: Lemmy servers are temporarily blocked from Sakurajima Social as Sharkey has issues federating with Lemmy, causing jobs piling up to the point that everything gets delayed. I had to restart the server and push the delayed jobs through to fix this.
I’m hoping this temporarily fixes these issues until there is a fix.
The affected servers are:
lemmy.ml
reddthat.com
(I will update the list if there is any more)
This only applies to Sakurajima Social. Follows are not removed when the block is temporarily in place.
Finally got the new server thumbnail, which will replace the old one from one of the photos I took this year. Note that it will take awhile since I need to run it with nightshade, but it will be slightly more Japanese themed. (Still has Sakura though)
I have to completely disable Fedi.Buzz relay temporarily on Sakurajima Social as it causes the jobs to start delaying, which stops new posts from coming in. This has been an issue lately, which cause my having to restart the server and then do all the tasks that were delayed.
This is a known issue. Once this issue is resolved with Sharkey, I will reenable it.
Urusai Social users may now request for a blog at Yoshino Garden. Note that we can wave the 1 month waiting period (as in you have to be a member for a month and have posts made on your account).
I addition, we added a few alternatives to Jetpack and Akismet that you can optionally enable such as WP Toolbelt and Antispam Bee. Note that Jetpack is enabled, but the functionality doesn't work unless you connect it. Toolbelt has the ability to enable some features of Jetpack not tied to the service.
Note that if you want to continue to use Jetpack, but not have your posts sent to the Wordpress Dot Com Firehose, which may be used by some AI companies, disable enhanced distribution by going to:
https://<your site>.yoshino.garden/wp-admin/wp-admin/admin.php?page=jetpack_modules and deactivate "Enhanced Distribution"
Mastodon is now updated with a reworked compose window. Note that some options have completely changed with this move with the upcoming release of Mastodon 4.3.
Unlisted is now considered “Quiet Public” and Direct Mention is now “Specific People."
Also, the Tennor Gif Picker is now added to Sakurajima, which is cherrypicked from the Chuckya fork of Mastodon. This only applies to the Glitch flavor of the Mastodon interface.
With the whole thing with WordPress dot com and the AI thing, we like to remind users that we do have blog hosting for active Sakurajima users who want a managed solution, but at no cost to get started with Japanese media blogging or sharing Japanese-inspired creations. Note that users cannot install their own plugins and themes, but a curated set of themes and plugins are available. Also, all AI are prohibited from training data from our blogs by default.
The idea with Yoshino Garden is to provide people who want to start a Japanese media blogging or a site to share creations. The idea is like with AnimeBlogger.net back in the day when it provided free Anime/Manga blogs.
With social networking ensittifying and taken over by AI bots, it's more than important to own your space and of course reviving the Aniblogosphere. (not to mention, Wordpress.com reduced the space on the free plan from 3 GB to 500 MB, before settling with 1 GB). Active patrons can get up to 6 GB of storage, the default storage limit is 3 GB.
If you plan to move from Wordpress.com to our blogging service, you are able to export your posts and then import them. If you need help, you can always ask on our forums.
