Stopping in at FB once every couple of months can sometimes be fun.

(yes, me on the far right)

And no, our band did not normally wear these wonderful polyester outfits; we were also in the glee club and served as the backing band.

Is there a word in any language for the sadness and ennui felt by people who have moved around lots and everybody they know and love live in different places, far from each other, and most of those people don't know each other so they rarely see them and are never surrounded by close people? #ThirdCultureKid #ExPat #migration #migrants #language #languages #TCK

I legitimately don't understand pride in where you were born or where you live. You had nothing to do with it, and probably your parents didn't either, most people move for economic reasons. At best, I guess, it makes sports more interesting, and at worst, it leads to genocide. If some places seem better than others the reason is usually money, better infrastructure, better schools, which is a whole other rant. Nothing wrong with enjoying the place you are, but feeling superiority about it, is just cringe.

@RickiTarr As a , I've never understood pride in one's location of origin either. No single place is perfect. No single place has everything everyone needs, or even everything one person needs. Every place we humans call "home" requires maintenance to preserve it or change to improve it. And, like you said, none of us contributed anything to the circumstances that led us to be born &/or raised where we were.

Nationalism is just willful ignorance. Patriotism isn't far behind imo.

My dad, my sister, my mother and myself walking along a path up in Puncak (the mountains south of Bogor where expats and well-off residents rented bungalows for the weekend).

1969 maybe? How old do I look there?

(and I'm not going to go into analysis of how our walking arrangement could be seen to reflect what was going on in our family at the time, fully unknown to me then of course)
