i use them sometimes. if it's possible to convey the same thought with a simpler sentence (i.e. without parentheses) then that is almost always the better option. but sometimes parenthetical quips or witty asides liven up prose that would otherwise be dull. they're more appropriate for some styles than others.
writers who use a stream-of-consciousness style often use parentheses, em dashes, and complex sentences that reflect the hitches, asides, & doubling-back of human thought. A Room of One's Own is full of them; this is just one example i found when i cracked the book open. (context: she's contrasting the crappy food at the women's college with that of Oxbridge, and complaining about the prunes.)
Only the fire sets me dreaming—of all the things I mean to write.
And London, in nips, is cramped and creased. Odd how often I think with what is love I suppose of the City; of the walk to the Tower; that is my England. I mean, if a bomb destroyed one of those little alleys with the brass bound curtains and the river smell and the old woman reading, I should feel—well, what the patriots feel.
#VirginiaWoolf, “Üç Gine” adlı eseri için “Benim savaşımın kitabı” der. Bu savaş; kadınların meslek sahibi olmalarının, istediği eğitimi alabilmelerinin, erkek egemenliğinin doğurduğu kıyımlara karşıdır.
Gazeteci Emek Erez, Woolf’un kendisi olabilmek için toplumun, ahlakın, verili rollerin onu biçimlemeye çalışmasını ifade eden “evdeki melek”i öldürerek kendisi olmanın peşine düştüğünü anlattı https://evrn.sl/kBxqH5
“She thought there were no Gods; no one was to blame; and so she evolved this atheist's religion of doing good for the sake of goodness.” — Virginia Woolf, Mrs. Dalloway
Stream of consciousness writing is a wild ride of thoughts and feelings. This style of writing shows so much more of each character.
