Today #KBR hosted the #PublicDomainDay event together with #meemoo and @wikimediafoundation Belgium. Many interesting talks! Good quality data is key to detect when something becomes public domain. With #MetaBelgica we aim to provide such high quality data.
I've also taken the detailed copyright questionnaire that Penn librarians used to document copyright in serials we hold, and made it available for Wikipedians. Here's my lightning talk with details: https://everybodyslibraries.com/2024/01/16/free-the-sources/
But the most notable, in other words the Crown Jewel of this new set has to be Mickey Mouse 1.0 (aka Steamboat Willie) which was a nearly 90 year wait.
I like this section of the piece which screenshot is attached below as while today is a cause for celebration, don't forget that there's still corporations and the copyright cartel that are attempting to kill these efforts.
All so called "free speech absolutists" should be vehemently opposed to all kinds of intellectual property, seeing as they are a state mandated monopoly on speech.
But I've never once seen any of these people ever utter a word against the concept of copyright or patents. But I haven't looked, so maybe they do I've just never seen it?
What do the Kingpin, Batgirl, the Herculoids, and King Louie of "The Jungle Book" have in common? They all should've entered public domain today under their original copyright terms... but didn't, thanks to retroactive extensions.
(Also, my obligatory "Mickey Mouse enters public domain today" comments.)
on #PublicDomainDay, your annual reminder that NO new works will be entering the public domain in canada till 2043 (!), thanks to the canadian government caving to US pressure in the USMCA deal. canada was life-plus-50, but last year it changed to life-plus-70.
Happy Public Domain Day! Disney's Steamboat Willie, the first appearance of Mickey Mouse, is now officially in the public domain - a day many thought might never come. Because I can, I've shared the entirety of the short film on YouTube, with a voiceover of me explaining public domain in the context of our favorite corporate Mouse. :) #publicdomain#publicdomainday#steamboatwilliehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnGL55VOj_4
It's #publicDomainDay so let's celebrate the #publicdomain with a new album of 6 archival recordings, 5 new covers of public domain tunes, and one newly composed medly of classic blues songs.
"Revolting Music: the prohibition years" is now available for free download/pay what you want!
A few bucks helps us out a lot, but!
This original work is licensed CC BY-SA, so feel free to share it around, remix it, use it in a music video, or give it away, just link back to us somewhere.
Great news. Last year's release of the IRR related to #Copyright stated that a registry will be created for Filipino works, and works produced in the Philippines, in the #PublicDomain.
In addition to the above, the IRR also finalised that any Philippine government works, unless otherwise specified, are now automatically in the Public Domain.
Friend of the Flickr Foundation, Hathi Trust, has 66,000 items that will enter the public domain in the US tomorrow, including 46,829 titles that will be available for readers globally. See what's becoming available.
