The engineering curriculum at my alma mater has dumbed down since I attended. Professors are sad about it and say it’s mostly due to two factors. Students are less able or willing to handle difficult technical classes than prior generations. And for economic reasons, administration doesn’t want to challenge students so much that they drop out of engineering. In my studies we had “weeder” classes that’d cause many students to reconsider their majors. The classes still exist but you don’t have to take them. Everything hard has been removed from the degree requirements. My grumpy opinion is that engineering is tough and maybe universities shouldn’t try so hard to pass everybody.

@leaf nah this is an ableist take. University becoming more accessible and accommodating to students isn't "dumbing down" the material. Punishing people because they aren't doing 80 hours of homework a week isn't okay and it never has been. I'm my experience, weeder classes arent highly technical at all. Just poorly taught.

If a student doesn't understand material it's a professors job to explain it to them. If students are avoiding a professor's class because it's too strenuous, difficult, and negatively impactful on students lives, that is not the fault of the students who are paying to learn and be taught. That isn't even mentioning the structural barriers to the workforce that often force people into degrees they don't want.

A school's job is to work with students to graduate as many as possible. We need more neurodivergent people in the workforce. We need nontraditional learners and people who think differently. Designing courses (especially weed out courses) for A-type overachievers with no systemic marginalization are how we get appalling statistics like "82.5% of engineers are male" or "1.2% of engineers are disabled women" source.

Weed out courses are a failure of education to meet the needs of students. Plain and simple. They're ableist as fuck. No one needs to work until they drop in order to properly learn. It's unhealthy.
