Funny, watching YT channels for a few years you get attached to people's dogs.

Then of course at some point they lose them and we all get sad. Two prominent ones I'm missing are Ella and Maggie.

Those were the side kicks of Thomas Johnson (the Maine woodworker) and Simon (the Norfolk UK camper) and I miss seeing the old dogs wandering into their shots.

@ottaross Same here. I'm sure the YouTubers understand the star potential of their furry companions. I'll have to check out the Maine woodworker.

@ottaross Is the channel name "Maine Woodworker" or similar? I don't seem to be able to find a match.

Grandma names were pretty great in the old days.

Saw a Mabel from @Shanitoba, and an Edna from @skatem and I had a Winifred.

Anyone have a classic grandma (or great-grandma) name?

Aussiemandias,
@Aussiemandias@mastodon.social avatar

@chiasm @ottaross @skatem @Shanitoba

My maternal grandma was Doris. I haven't seen that at all these days. I had a lot of maternal great aunts who were more like aunts in my life: Gladys, Merle, Dorothy, Lillias, Blanche, Beryl, Neita, Daphne, Gloria

Aussiemandias,
@Aussiemandias@mastodon.social avatar

@ottaross @chiasm @skatem @Shanitoba My mother's middle name was Neita as a result. But I never knew their real names, at least, not until much later. The sisters all had nicknames and so we used those instead, but always 'Aunty' preceding: Nin, Dookie, Did, Dot etc.

@chiasm @ottaross @skatem @Shanitoba Here's Doris. Sadly, my mother never knew her because she died only days after giving birth to her one and only child.

Aussiemandias,
@Aussiemandias@mastodon.social avatar

@chiasm @ottaross @skatem @Shanitoba She experienced a rare form of eclampsia that caused a series of grand mal seizures - totally treatable these days but in a 1947 country town hospital in Australia, not something that was known, apparently. She couldn't work prior to getting married because of the hormone-related seizures that pregnancy made fatal. (Sorry for the downer on the otherwise fun thread, but it's something not well-known in these times)

I would've liked to meet her. My Mum was given to one of Doris' sisters to look after and my Grandfather returned to his seasonal work as a type of cowboy in the outback. My Mum never saw much of him from then on. I met his twice before he died.

@Aussiemandias@mastodon.social avatar

@skatem @chiasm @Shanitoba @ottaross I often wish I'd sat down with the older folk, who are all gone now, and recorded them telling their stories. Imagine what your Aunt Doris could have told us.

@ottaross I believe you're wise in the ways of electronics? I've got a project with a solar panel delivering 6W, 5V output and I want to charge 6 x 3.7V 18650 batteries in parallel (not series). I want overcharge and overdischarge protection. I've seen plenty of these (see link) but nothing for the number of cells I want to use. They are all for one cell. Those that can do multiple cells always seem to assume the batteries are in series.

@ottaross Thanks! I was just about to start mulling over DIY build and then saw this. Seems to be what I'm looking for. https://shorturl.at/cfgGZ

Aussiemandias,
@Aussiemandias@mastodon.social avatar

@ottaross Or maybe this. I think I need higher input voltage for LTO anyway, so I can get a alightly bigger solar panel. Then if I have it right, I change the variable resistor to reflect the desired output? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08293S4PL?psc=1&smid=A2KRDQ1AI5Y5G6&ref_=chk_typ_imgToDp

Aussiemandias,
@Aussiemandias@mastodon.social avatar

@ottaross I see someone else using it, but with super capacitors. My plan is to have LTO batteries instead. I know nothing about super capacitors for this sort of application.

Aussiemandias,
@Aussiemandias@mastodon.social avatar

@ottaross Yes, lower voltage. Also less energy dense. But good for cold climes. I want to have it robust and low maintenance. I also have to find a place to put it with good line of sight to a good chunk of the city.

Aussiemandias,
@Aussiemandias@mastodon.social avatar

@ottaross It will probably take time to source the LTO batteries that I want, so I might start with some Lithium Ion batteries for when it's warmer then upgrade later.

    Was out and about three times this week, but with judicious use of a mask. Thought to do a COVID test heading into the weekend, just in case.

    Sinuses are a little irritated today actually, but prob allergens. Glad to still be negative. A good stretch of prob seven years since I've had any sort of respiratory bug. Hope to keep it up.

    @ottaross My son started with a mild head cold last week. This week he's still home and it's full blown - moved to his chest now. We are so far so good, although I feel a little off 100%. Apparently going around his class at school. He is almost never I'll, so it's new for us and him

    Aussiemandias,
    @Aussiemandias@mastodon.social avatar

    @ottaross Thankfully, the rest of us in the house didn't get whatever cold the boy had, which is some kind of miracle. He's back at school. I was told by the teachers that strep is doing the rounds right now.

    I occasionally find myself like this morning before desk time, making pea soup on a Friday. It feels like a nice homage to all the workplace cafeterias I frequented over the years that would always have Friday pea soup.

    Is that a Canadian Thing™ only, or does it happen elsewhere too?

    I guess there are some Quebec Catholic origins in there somewhere, of which I am only vaguely aware.

    @ottaross Pea and ham soup was an occasional winter treat in the sub-tropics where I grew up. Mum would make it from scratch most of the time, although we did have canned if she couldn't be bothered. Even though I've been in Canada for 13 years now, I wasn't aware that it was tradition. Must go ask my wife, who was born in Quebec.

    @Aussiemandias@mastodon.social avatar

    @ottaross A lot of the recipes were handed down from Scots ancestors - puddings, soups, stews and so on. Not sure where she got the pea and ham recipe from but betting it's from one of her MacLennan aunts.

    Wah - unexpected power outage. That's pretty rare here. Worst we see is the odd few seconds during a nasty summer storm.

    Aussiemandias,
    @Aussiemandias@mastodon.social avatar

    @ottaross Was it down for maintenance reasons? We just had a transfer switch installed so we can plug in our EcoFlow batteries to power 6 essential circuits during a power outage. We also have 400W of portable solar panels to extend the usage time of the batteries and a small generator as a last resort. We lost power for over 6 days following the derecho and we resolved to have something in place for the inevitable outages to come.

    Aussiemandias,
    @Aussiemandias@mastodon.social avatar

    @ottaross @johnefrancis @geekingirl Great origin story! My 11-year-old is a promising artist and animator. I might challenge him to come up with something.

    Aussiemandias,
    @Aussiemandias@mastodon.social avatar

    @ottaross Likewise: we had the car inverter get us mostly through those 6+ days and lucky I had a 1000watt model because our neighbour asked if he could run his fridge off it as well. Some grumblings from one neighbour about us idling our car. It wasn't that much but at least next time we should be able to avoid engines for the duration of most outages.
