People are really out there talking about how important TikTok is as a source of information because it let people know about a thing, and then when you look up the thing, it's just misinformation.

Wait, is a "hot minute" a long time or a short time?

Cool. Cool cool cool cool cool. Good language.

I've gone through a lot of violence from men. I'd still rather encounter one alone in the woods than a bear.

BathysphereHat,
@BathysphereHat@mastodon.online avatar

Here's the thing: the fact that multiple men have committed violence against me is very closely statistically tied to the fact that I regularly encounter human men. It's not because most men are dangerous.

BathysphereHat,
@BathysphereHat@mastodon.online avatar

The fact that I've never been harmed by a bear is closely tied to the fact that I've never encountered a bear in the wild.

BathysphereHat,
@BathysphereHat@mastodon.online avatar

But what's actually going on here is that people are expressing their feelings, not literal and clearheaded answers to the literal question of whether they'd rather encounter a man or a bear.

BathysphereHat,
@BathysphereHat@mastodon.online avatar

As an autistic person, I find this mode of communication confusing and frustrating, but that doesn't excuse the men who are getting really mad and being fucked up towards women about it.

BathysphereHat,
@BathysphereHat@mastodon.online avatar

What I do find actually really fucked up about this is that the man in supposed to be a stranger. Men who commit violence against women are almost never strangers, they're partners and family members and such.

BathysphereHat,
@BathysphereHat@mastodon.online avatar

If you made the question "Would you rather encounter a bear alone in the woods or a man you DO know?" the answer would probably be almost universally "man", even though that's actually a more dangerous proposition than encountering a man you don't know.

BathysphereHat,
@BathysphereHat@mastodon.online avatar

So my frustration with this discourse isn't that it's "misandry" or some shit. It's not even that people aren't being very good at statistics. It's the stranger danger, true crime brainworms.

BathysphereHat,
@BathysphereHat@mastodon.online avatar

The first kind of harm this kind of stranger danger thinking does is to the people encouraged to think that way: paranoia is a painful thing. But it also hurts people they encounter. The Uber driver in Texas is an extreme example, but it's also people who've had the cops called on them for just existing in public near someone who got scared, people who've had their images posted online with baseless accusations of stalking and attempted kidnapping, etc.

BathysphereHat,
@BathysphereHat@mastodon.online avatar

And beyond that, people are hurt by policies enacted because of this kind of paranoia about strangers. It's used to justify increasing surveillance, giving more power to the cops, etc - things that contribute to the rising tide of fascism.

BathysphereHat,
@BathysphereHat@mastodon.online avatar

Framing this thinking as a gender politics thing, a case of Men Just Don't Understand What It's Like To Be A Woman, puts a progressive facade on regressive, reactionary thinking.

BathysphereHat,
@BathysphereHat@mastodon.online avatar

It's also worth noting that the men who are most harmed are marginalised men, especially Latino and Black men.

I saw someone on tumblr arguing that it's Problematic to ship vampires who were turned by the same vampire because it's "incest".

I like it when games let you change your character's gender and/or gender presentation at will, but I think it's really funny when it's locked behind an endgame quest. Like "I saved the world so I could fucking transition, ok?"

I can't stop thinking about how Steve Jobs thought he didn't need to bathe because he thought that as a vegan, his body didn't produce mucus.

BathysphereHat,
@BathysphereHat@mastodon.online avatar

I just have a lot of questions.

BathysphereHat,
@BathysphereHat@mastodon.online avatar

Thoughts:

  • Mucus isn't even the reason we need to bathe.
  • Did he think everyone was covered in mucus all the time? Like a snail or a slug??
  • Not producing mucus would be really bad. Like, it serves a lot of important purposes in the body, and you'd probably die pretty fast without it.
  • Didn't he get itchy?
  • What the fuck, Steve?

I think there are a lot of compelling arguments for atheism. That said, I keep hearing the argument that "everyone is born an atheist", and that isn't one of them. Like, babies don't know shit. What's your point?

BathysphereHat,
@BathysphereHat@mastodon.online avatar

I'm just saying, I could name a lot of definitely real things that babies don't believe in.
