I’ve noticed a lot of instances are using to collect instance fees and donations. Patreon is shareholder owned. When you make payments through Patreon, 7% of your payment goes to Patreon, which ultimately goes to Patreon shareholders.

That’s not a model that suits the . Here’s an alternative: use https://opencollective.com/. It’s a co-op, and it only charges 2%, which ultimately gets used to fund new . Now, that’s a more , fediverse-style model, isn’t it!

Proposal to make the Mastodon signup better:

Mastodon GmbH should start a server that's just for people signing up who don't know about servers yet. People can stay on there for a limited time (say, a month or two), after which their profile/data will be removed if they haven't moved to another server.

This means people willing to put the time into picking a server can do so, while those who don't are dropped on the server for starters instead of dropping out of the signup funnel.

So instead of leading with "pick a server" you can say "Join a server to get started" and offer the options:
"Choose now" OR "Choose later (we'll add you to the Mastodon server for starters. You'll have a month to look around and choose a server you like.)"

Of course for this to be a decent user experience:

  1. Switching servers needs to be easier, and
  2. You need to be able to bring your post history with you when switching servers.

Yes, those are some big upgrades, but they need to happen anyway.
