shower thought: imo Workplace is aggressively mediocre. (For those who don't know, Workplace is basically Facebook repackaged for work.)

What about Mastodon for work? Run a Mastodon server, give everyone an account. Important or noteworthy content would get boosted around for wider visibility, discussions would be super natural, people would feel less friction vs. the overhead involved in putting a Workplace post together and figuring out what group it belongs in.

🤔

@miki true. I'm sure OIDC auth support could be added, and it could be worked around in the meantime.

Cldfire,
@Cldfire@hachyderm.io avatar

@miki all fair points. I think if anything a startup-type company would try an idea like this vs. a larger corp, and the startup environment would minimize the impact of those concerns

@miki maybe at the scale of 50-100 people

the year is 2024. I now have all of my favorite social media services on my dock as cute little web apps. Sandboxed, snappy, and with full push notification support. Each one is able to freely experiment with UI/UX to push beyond what "native" UI frameworks offer (with Phanpy being a stunning example of what that freedom unlocks). And they can all publish changes dozens of times a day with no overhead and no app review to slow them down.

Life is good 🙌

Speaking of things that don’t work – I’ve always used and liked 1Password, but for the past year or so their Safari extension has barely worked for me on Mac and iPad. It regularly fails to authenticate or just never comes up.

Sad, but not surprised, to see that their Vision Pro experience with compatibility mode doesn’t work out of the box either with Safari. I get this empty spinner that never goes away 🤷‍♂️

I may have to finally consider other options for personal and team use. 😔

Cldfire,
@Cldfire@hachyderm.io avatar

@viticci hey Federico! 1Password employee here 🙂. I also hit this issue with Safari in my AVP on launch day. It's a visionOS bug with the biometric auth API that causes the optic ID window to break, and we're looking forward to seeing it fixed in an upcoming visionOS update.

In the meantime, if you ignore the broken optic ID window you can enter your account password manually into the extension pop-up, and I can confirm it works great after that 🙌.

Did I miss something? Are games not apps?

Cldfire,
@Cldfire@hachyderm.io avatar

@dotproto isn't the first link EU-specific, and the second link is US-specific? So anyone using the external payment API with the 27% commission won't be paying the core technology fee?

macOS's screen recording functionality is great, but especially if you're recording the entire screen it produces very large file sizes by default, which can make the recordings difficult to share.

with a little ffmpeg you can trim the file sizes by over 10x with almost zero quality loss. i would love to see macOS do better compression by default

Cldfire,
@Cldfire@hachyderm.io avatar

@janl ffmpeg -i "/path/to/recording.mov" -crf 17 "/path/output.mov" takes a 800 MB, 7:20 macOS screen recording down to 80 MB for me.

You could probably fiddle around with hardware-accelerating the transcode too.

2/10 experience driving a non-Tesla EV for the past four days in Northeast Ohio.

Chargers are rare, fast chargers are rarer. Some are broken; maps will say so-and-so charger exists, but it doesn't; and most chargers are in front of businesses, in residential allotments, or at auto dealerships, all of which feel odd when looking for a quick charge. If you do find a charger, the max capacity is probably 1-2 vehicles... and if a F-150 Lightning happens to be occupying the single charging slot...

Cldfire,
@Cldfire@hachyderm.io avatar

This morning on the way to the Cleveland airport I stopped by the only reasonably fast (65kw) charger that I found in a 20-mile radius and had used successfully in the past few days.

It was in front of a business. I tried using it and was told I was "unauthorized". Of course, the business restricts its usage to their employees only during work hours. 😭

Cldfire,
@Cldfire@hachyderm.io avatar

I tried finding another charger further north. There were two decently fast (19kw) chargers showing as available on the map, so I went there.

Turns out, the location of the chargers on the map was wrong; I had to drive around the residential allotment looking for them. I found them and plugged in my car. The dashboard showed the car recognized it was plugged in, and the charger's app said I was connected and it would start charging soon, but charging never happened even after multiple tries.

Cldfire,
@Cldfire@hachyderm.io avatar

So ultimately I ended up returning the car without charging it up and eating a $35 fee as a result. And overall feeling a lot less confident about any kind of successful American EV transition starting in the next couple years, because while I am willing to put up with this 90% of people are just going to stick to gas where they can literally throw a dart at a map to fuel up 🫠

Cldfire,
@Cldfire@hachyderm.io avatar

@miki yeah, that's definitely an interesting problem as well.

Replacing all existing ICE vehicles with electric ones isn't sustainable, so hopefully the massive reduction in cars that (should) happen alongside the transition to electric helps with that problem somewhat.

Very excited for Steam Deck OLED 👀 one thing I haven't seen any content creators / reviewers mention yet is the following changelog entry (from https://www.steamdeck.com/en/oled):

> Added preliminary support for open-source BIOS and EC firmware

Awesome!

can the new wake on bluetooth (eg when it’s docked to a tv and you power on a paired controller) like a normal console?

@derekvanvliet according to Valve it should be able to (https://www.steamdeck.com/en/oled):

kudos to the whole team!

now can we get a iOS 17 home screen widget that shows me my exit node status and lets me toggle it on / off 👀

@miki hmm not sure, I don't see a way to do that. Hopefully they add it soon!
