The unspoken context behind the "Battle of Montgomery" video:

  • When media mentions "blue collar" jobs, they usually picture rural white folk. But... most employed Black and Latinx people work blue collar jobs, and most people live in cities. In the US, blue collar employees are Black and brown.🤷🏿‍♂️

  • Blue collar employees are often asked to enforce rules, (like mask mandates).

  • When racist white people get drunk, they often use slurs against, spit at, or physically strike these Black workers.

D_J_Nathanson,
@D_J_Nathanson@mastodon.social avatar

@mekkaokereke Two things:

  1. As you say, I hate violence, too. But demanding perfect, restrained proportionality from Black people responding to racist violence is unreasonable.
  2. I wouldn’t assume the folks arrested can’t vote, not yet at least. The states with felony disenfranchisement that I know about require that you actually be convicted first. But I don’t know Alabama. Happy to be corrected.

@mekkaokereke Voter education campaigns in jails are on the rise. In MA, we’ve actually had a number of Sheriffs cooperate with them in recent years. And in Boston, there were a number of candidate forums actually inside the jail, including the races for local prosecutor. https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2018/06/26/unusual-forum-candidates-for-seek-support-inmates/jnp6JHbkRqRBokZGutY6GP/story.html

The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court's Standing Advisory Committee on the Rules of Appellate Procedure (I'm a member) just proposed changes to the rules to permit filers to list their pronouns.

Here's my pitch to - even if you're a cis person with an unambiguous name, listing your pronouns on filings normalizes the practice and supports your trans and nonbinary colleagues. I need to be more consistent about this myself. https://www.mass.gov/info-details/notice-inviting-comments-on-proposed-amendments-to-rules-13-16-and-20-of-the-rules-of-appellate-procedure

It's all connected.🧵

93 years ago tomorrow, Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith were arrested on suspicion of murder of a white man and rape of a white woman. They were lynched less than 24 hours later by a mob in Marion, Indiana. A third arrestee, 16 year old James Cameron, narrowly escaped death. He went on to found and lead multiple NAACP chapters, he led Indiana's state civil liberties agency, wrote voluminously, and founded America's Black Holocaust Museum.

You know this incident because...

D_J_Nathanson,
@D_J_Nathanson@mastodon.social avatar

After the lynching, Abel Meeropol, a Jewish communist schoolteacher from the Bronx, wrote the song "Strange Fruit," which became Billie Holliday's signature. And not just a signature, she insisted on it, opening each show with it. The beautiful sound of the song contrasts so powerfully with the lyrics depicting lynchings that she became a political target for the racist power structure. /2

D_J_Nathanson,
@D_J_Nathanson@mastodon.social avatar

When Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were executed for atomic espionage — Ethel was almost certainly innocent — Abel Meeropol and his wife Anne adopted the Rosenberg’s children Robert and Michael and raised them as their own. They went on to have significant careers in activism and academia and founded the Rosenberg Fund for Children which supports children who have been targeted because of their or their parent’s progressive activism. /3

Remember, when cops ask you questions, ask for a lawyer and then STFU:

  • I am not interested in discussing how I’m doing or where I’m going.

  • Am I free to leave?

  • I am not answering any questions.

  • If they ask to search your bag (or anything else): "I do not consent to a search."

  • I want to speak to a lawyer. Then actually call a lawyer!

Prisoners with mental disabilities claim discrimination by Massachusetts Parole Board

“The case is particularly important because … 41% of male prisoners and 79% of female prisoners had an open mental health case at the end of 2022; and 34% of men and 74% of women had a ‘serious mental illness.’”

Mike Pence referring to a “gaggle of crackpot lawyers” is rude, unprofessional, dehumanizing, and unbecoming a presidential candidate.

The preferred terminology is “The Federalist Society.”

@Popehat That would be the Federalist Society which has chapters at most major law schools.

Apropos of non-Native Masto users making fun of an user (not me) for being light-skinned, let's talk about the colonial thought structure called BLOOD QUANTUM.

You might have wondered things like: Why do some Natives look so white? Are they reeeeally Native? Aren’t they just white people with one distant Native ancestor? Etc. Etc.

Here are some things to keep in mind.

How many fencers are there on the Fediverse? Did you lapse or do you feel fencing is too dilettante and you'd prefer a mace?

From the world's most trivial news dept: So I've had the same broken laundry hamper for like ... twenty years. I inherited it from a roommate after college, and it gradually fell apart but I kept telling myself it was absurd to replace a thing that's just for laundry. Finally, I couldn't even put stuff into it anymore because it kept collapsing. So I bought a brand-new one! And I keep marveling at it. A hamper that looks nice and isn't cracked and stained and torn! It's a whole new era.
