For users of Voice Dream Reader: I found an extremely serious bug in v4.34.4 of VDR. I have reported the following bug to the VDR mailing list. I'm very confident that it will be fixed and so my intent in posting this on Mastodon is not to start a VDR bashing session but just to make other users aware of this bug. Here is what I sent to the list.

Hello. In this latest version of VDR I am no longer able to successfully import any files from OneDrive via the file browser.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. With VoiceOver enabled, double-tap the Add button.
  2. Choose File Browser.
  3. Choose a file with a recognized file format: audio, text, Word document, etc. You will hear that your file has been added.
  4. Select the Done button.
  5. In the VDR library, move focus to the file that you tried to import. VDR sees the file but reports it as being “unavailable.”

If this bug is reproducible, I consider it to be an extremely high-priority issue as I am no longer able to import any new files into VDR.

DavidGoldfield,

@Rich If the rumors about AI capabilities in Apple products are correct, I predict we'll see AI make its way into VoiceOver's image descriptions.

DavidGoldfield,

@pixelate @Rich I'm curious as to which extra voices will be available for VoiceOver.

Hey everyone! I've got some very good news! So did you guys think that the natural voices would be exclusive to narrator? Did you guys think the natural voices wouldn't even make it to other screen readers? Well, you all thought wrong! Because guess what? Thanks to a video on YouTube, I found out there is an NVDA addon for these voices! And it even works on windows 10! You can get this addon at datajake.braillescreen.net, TTS, synthesizers for NVDA, and titled neural voices. The rest of you guys can thank me later! Feel free to boost this post! It deserves one!

DavidGoldfield,

@mckensie Would you please provide a URL for this? @datajake1999 can you confirm this and is this legal?

DavidGoldfield, to DoctorWho

I'm speechless. Bookshare recently added hundreds of Doctor Who novels. Looks like the bulk of them were added on April 12. I submitted a support request in February asking them if they could work with BBC Books to import their back catalog. I don't know if my request contributed to what I'm seeing but it sure looks as though this has happened. It's amazing to finally have a legal source for obtaining these books, at least for those with qualifying print disabilities. For some this may not seem like a big deal but I've wanted to have access to this collection since the mid-90s and it's finally available. I almost have tears in my eyes going through the list.
