Like clockwork, I am once again back to release a new #FreeTube update due to recent YouTube changes.

The new v0.19.2 update is pretty small this time around, but it comes with some important fixes to get our local API working again.

The next major update should be a pretty big one so I hope you'll excuse the small update for now.

Hello @FreeTube , I just installed your app on Windows 10 and Android 14. No problem on Windows but on Android 14, I can't launch it (crash on launch). May you help me ?

Hello!

May I ask where you downloaded the Android version? We do not have an official Android version at this time.

I'd be very careful about downloading any sort of YouTube player from the Play Store. There's been reports of forks of Newpipe being published to the Play Store with ads and possibly other trackers.

The app you just linked to is not affiliated with us in any way and I cannot promise that it's safe to download.

For Android, I would recommend installing Newpipe within F-Droid.

@FreeTube yo, I keep seeing the suggestion to use a vpn. But I don’t want to. If I just use the FreeTube app with a normal connection, will anything bad happen?

(For example, an ip ban or something like that.)

Hey there!

A VPN is technically optional. If you don't want to use one then FreeTube will work fine and there shouldn't be any risks to being IP banned.

The reason it is usually suggested is because by default FreeTube will make a direct connection to YouTube, so your IP is used to make that call. Using a VPN will send the VPNs IP instead, which is usually preferred for most users.

If you're okay with this, then there's no reason for you to need one.

Also for this release, the Flatpak version will unfortunately be delayed.

Something about the Flathub build site seems to not be working properly. Once it gets resolved I'll attempt to build the Flatpak version again.

Sorry for the inconvenience!

I know it's been a while since I've posted here, but I at least have some good news.

Today, we're release v0.19.0 of FreeTube!

This release includes something for just about everyone. There's so many features, changes, and fixes that I won't be able to list all of them.

Hey there!

To clarify, Invidious does support proxying videos through an instance like Piped does, though it depends on if that instance has it turned on or not. Even so, you have to enable it within their settings.

FreeTube follows a similar flow. By default, it'll connect directly to YouTube to get the information it needs, but you can proxy the video / data through Invidious if you'd like.

Either way, I'd recommend also using a VPN when using any of our apps.
