NEW VIDEO! I put Ubuntu 24.04 minimum requirements to the test with a very old Mac Mini.

@ActionRetro I've got four retired 2010 Mac Minis (that were servers in a previous life), as well as a load of spare SATA SSDs. New DDR3 is cheap and plentiful.

Now that you've done all that, you've got me thinking of what else I could do with a stack of four fully-upgraded mid-2010s... 🤔

NEW VIDEO! Running Mac OS on an Apple II

https://youtu.be/NT5fb6wR5M8

Geekman,
@Geekman@bitbang.social avatar

@ActionRetro It almost feels more (but not quite) like this turns the Apple II into a terminal for a mainframe which is running in one of the Apple II's own card slots.

But as a video title, that doesn't have quite the same ring to it.

@ActionRetro Amazing. Honestly Juicycrumb should consider a version of the board that just accommodates a modern Mac Mini motherboard. I suspect more than a few people would buy it!

Rant/Top tip: Your local business isn't JUST failing because amazon undercuts you.

It's also because people (like me) who want to spend money at a local business, looked up your hours and location on your website, planned a morning around coming by, drove over to find your storefront papered over with a printed note saying you'd moved to the other side of town – a fact not reflected on your website, or Google Maps. 😑

I'm sick of seeing so much misinformation about EVs recently. I own an EV and love it, and can tell you firsthand that a lot of the FUD is false.

So if you also hate misinformation, and if reading lengthy blog posts is still a thing people do in 2024, here you go.

Inspired by @mac84tv 's recent adventures with the classic 1999 Compaq (in all its original be-stickered glory), I decided to answer the question literally no one asked: What if t-shirts advertised themselves like late-90s PCs? 🤔

If like me, you were a child of the '90s, you might remember "ReBoot" – a pioneering 3D animated kids series created by Vancouver's own Mainframe Entertainment.

These documentarians have gotten a hold of the original, uncompressed digital masters. The problem is, they're in the D-1 format.

If anyone in the community has access to a Bosch BTS D1, or a comparable D1 player/decoder, I urge you to reach out to @ReBootReWind (on Twitter) to help preserve !

Another day cleaning out our last office where Mac OS X Server legacy still hides.

Just lifted up a random CD jewel case (for Microsoft Frontpage XP) and there was a stack of NINE Apple decals, two stickers each (that's 19 Apples).

Man, we office-workers are packrats. 😅

Welp, I think I'm going to make the EV plunge with a used 2020 Model 3 😬

Geekman,
@Geekman@bitbang.social avatar

@ActionRetro May or may not suit the price range (and not sure if used is an option in your general area), but last year my wife and I got a new Kona EV. We'd been saving for a while. The reviews all said it was an excellent car and they were right.

I don't miss anything about gas cars. Not the noise or the weak performance or control feel or paying for gas to burn and destroy the planet. I love my EV, period.

(And yes, generally the software works very well.)

Hi folks – My stuff is on Threadless too, but I'm sometimes bad at keeping my shop up to date because the designs interface can be very slow.

Well, I've added/updated designs in the shop and Threadless is having their Memorial Day sale. If you like my stuff but have hesitated because of pricing (or you don't like TeePublic), this might be an opportunity for you.

Geekman,
@Geekman@bitbang.social avatar

@freehours9 It's... fine? 😅 The print quality is generally quite solid – durable, decent colour-matching. The difficulty I find is using their design system, which is super sluggish and sometimes just times out.

I haven't used Cotton Bureau before so I don't have basis for comparison.

Another great retro find from clearing out our defunct office. I have no idea how it ended up at work, but I got this – The NCSA Mosaic Handbook (for the Macintosh) as a starry-eyed teen way back in 1994 (the year it was published).

Mosaic was an early web browser whose code became that basis for the original Internet Explorer. Before I even had an internet connection, this classic O'Reilly book taught me how to make HTML pages, and the protocol basics of HTTP.
