    @grivettcarnac a few years ago I had a few flats in one week. We changed the rim tape and I didn’t have a flat for years. Don’t ask me why a rim tape creates flats but it was likely the culprit.

    @Hansonthebike@mastodon.world avatar

    @grivettcarnac @ShaunOttawa my rim tape looked still brand new too, it wasn’t ripped and shredded or anything.

    “Dozens” as in >250. That’s technically dozens, but hundreds would have been more appropriate, but hey, CTV. The one that puts polls out like ”Should cyclists be allowed to ride in winter”.

    With the opening of the Chief William Commanda bridge, it was time to create an update of my subway style map with routes of the Canadian capital region (and yes, not all mups are on here). The map shows a network of routes, simular to how subway maps look like, to visualize the cycling opportunities on multi use pathways in the area. This map doesn’t show bike lanes on roads.

    And here is my blog post with more history of the bridge and lots of then and now photos and maps. https://hansonthebike.com/2023/08/05/prince-of-wales-bridge-reopens-as-active-transportation-bridge-with-new-name/

    I’m happy to share spaces with cyclists, but there’s no reason for cyclists to be so aggressive in shared spaces.

    Went to check out the new bridge and it’s so great for active transit users, but there were some unnecessarily aggressive cyclists.

    Now the 1 km Chief William Commanda Active Transportation bridge (and Lemieux island) between #Ottawa and #Gatineau is open and already appears hugely successful, and receives raving reviews, I am going to look in the super interesting history of the bridge and its tracks that lead up to it. With historic and new photos and maps. https://hansonthebike.com/2023/08/05/prince-of-wales-bridge-reopens-as-active-transportation-bridge-with-new-name/ #ottbike #ottwalk

    The William Commanda bridge tbfkaPoW, is finally open for Active Transportation between Ottawa and Gatineau (photo earlier this week by Patrick McKay. Photo shows a steel train bridge from 1927 with wooden deck for active transportation. The bridge crosses a large body of water and is approximately 1 km long.

    The sign (2 actually) has been blocking the sidewalk for weeks. I am surprised no one complained about it but worse, why does this still happen in 2023 when there is a 10 meter wide road?

    It has always bothered me that traffic signs for cyclists are mounted high as if we go 100 kph on a highway. There is no need for that. I always appreciate that the NCC recognises that and mounts the signs at eye level. Here are two examples. The green one is mounted way too high. It is easy to miss high mounted signs

    Hans on the Bike standing in front of a green sign. He is trying to read a green route sign that is mounted far above his head. He is somewhat exaggerating as the letters are quite large but he tries to make his point.

    If you have enough of LRT and you live within about 8 km or less from you destination, cycling might be an alternative for you. 8 km equals about 30 minutes of cycling for many of us. Look up an route on https://maps.bikeottawa.ca/routing/ (tick 🔵 and 🟢 for low stress traffic). (Yes it sometimes offers an odd option bc software is not a human)

    Day 87 of recovery break. Cool morning for a 29 KM ride around before heading off to .

    Hansonthebike,
    @Hansonthebike@mastodon.world avatar

    @WTL did you cycle on st Laurent and then underneath the Queensway from what I can see? That must not be easy.

    Hansonthebike,
    @Hansonthebike@mastodon.world avatar

    @WTL I have an alternative route. At Cyrville station, go underneath the bridge then cross the bridge SB and cycle through that light industrial area, which is very quiet. Then cross the road to Tremblay. See the dotted line bottom right. More routes on HansontheBike.com

    It really bothers me that Bluesfest (ie NCC) closes the pathway between 5 and midnight for two weeks. It is not like you put the pedal to the medal for a quick detour like drivers can. 5 pm is still commute time and just closing a busy, if not the busiest, route is wrong without a safe alternative.

    Hansonthebike, to random
    @Hansonthebike@mastodon.world avatar

    The Ottawa river pathway is one of the busiest, if not the busiest pathway in Ottawa. On past Canada Days, the counters counted 3000 to as high as 5000 bike trips on a single day: the highest of the entire year anywhere in the city. Unfortunately the NCC closed the pathways days in advance for fireworks (which are not good for the environment anyway). Some cities are experimenting with drone or light shows instead.
