I would seriously recommend you use gentoo for a bit. It is not user friendly, you use the command line constantly, the install process is mostly manual. But nothing teaches you the fundamentals like using it.

Now, personally I did this on a second PC as a home server hobby. Dunno if I’d recommend it for a novice wanting a desktop experience.

That’s mostly replaced by emerge @preserved-rebuild now.

Doesn’t the mute feature do the same thing? I’m honestly not sure what the distinction is.

Heavybell,

Okay, well that sucks then. Hopefully Apple and Google actually put their feet down on this then.

It’ll be interesting to see if Abode turns out to be a worthy alternative or just a stunt.

Heavybell,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

I suspect that’s the idea.

Wake me when you can uninstall the Chat app without powershell (which I assume is a thing but don’t use Win11 so I don’t know)

8’d say it’s only bad by the standards of the first world. Not counting foreign policy here, mind you.

People in here talking about how future generations might be less tech savvy due to growing up with locked down devices and phones. I am worried things might go a different way. If tech companies manage to push open systems out, forcing us all onto locked down computing appliances, I could easily see myself being left behind as I try to cling to the glory days of being able to actually code my own solutions and configure an OS to my liking, etc.

The devs are mostly not the problem with the state of AAA games today, it’s the people telling them what to do in order to maximise profits.

Same as with most problems we face as a species, really.

higher wages for the servers... by the customers. Fnbs (lemmy.world)

Went to a restaurant in LA today and when I got the check I noticed that it was a bit higher than it should be. Then I noticed this 18% service charge. So… We, as customers, need to help pay for their servers instead of the owners paying their servers a living wage. And on top of that they have suggested tip. I called bs on...

Heavybell,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

If the service charge is always there then just raise prices by 18% and stop misleading people ffs…

Look up WEI API. Something serious is happening.

Heavybell,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

I seriously doubt any amount of user backlash will help put the genie back in the bottle, once it’s out. And nobody is going to change to the browser that can’t access the popular site du jour that now requires WEI attestation to access. If WEI gets rolling it’ll be impossible to fight.

That said I totally understand this is almost certainly already lost. Chromium’s market share is unassailable and there’s no way we can convince enough people to swap off it until there’s nothing to swap to. It just sucks to think nothing can be done, so please forgive people like me for trying anyway.

Heavybell,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

It won’t be the only option, it’ll just be the only practical option because some sites will only support WEI. I see any antitrust case being rejected on those grounds, and on the grounds of other browsers choosing not to support WEI.

I think I had a sapphire once years ago and it was fine. That said honestly what you should be looking for is what their warranty claim processes are like. That’s the main important distinction between them, after all. The only other things to research are things like how effective is the cooler, how noisy is it, etc.

A shit-tonne more money. Like, more than the extra time spent travelling to and from work worth of salary.

Heavybell,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

Exactly this. Unless I am intentionally being an arse by refusing to read American products which rely on the Z being read as “zee” to work in the intended pronunciation. It’s the little things that make life worth living, y’know.

Heavybell,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

My mate had a Nissan Z something and yes we’d call it the Nissan Zed.

Heavybell,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

This is correct. ;)

Heavybell,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

You should swap to something else. Anything else, tho ideally something that actually respects your privacy like Firefox. If more people did, maybe WEI would not be on the horizon.

It’s not free, but I do find it amusing that StarDock – the company that once brought us the MacOS dock for Windows – has probably the best start menu replacement now that Microsoft are trying to make the task bar even more like the MacOS dock.

People who back into parking spots: Why?

To me, it seems objectively easier to pull into a parking space forward and then back out of the space when you are ready to leave. You don’t have to line up with the lines while driving backwards, and it’s easier to keep from hitting other cars as well. So why back in? To me, the only advantage I can think of is that you...

Heavybell,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

It’s far safer to take off forwards, you have much better visibility. And when backing in, you have good visibility and are also visible to other drivers.

Odd headline. Seems very rooted in the assumption of online gaming these days to me but then you get in and the article is basically just saying the game is a huge success, which is great news I’m sure we can all agree. :)
