Pre-dawn, giving in and getting up. Had one of those “seeing my place as others do” moments. It was terrifying, so looks like it’s office-cleaning day.
Morning tracks: Del Cinque, Sonatas for 2- and 3 cellos. An incredibly prolific composer for cello not nearly as well-known as deserved.
The trio: Ludovico Minasi, Theodoro Baù, Christina Vidoni

Staving off Monday with Locatelli, Robyn Schiff’s collection, “Information Desk: An Epic” and a decent glass of Gigondas.

It’s been a grueling couple of weeks with obscenely early mornings at The Day Job. As one of my bosses says, it’s “stupid o’clock.”

I feel morally obligated to attend any program featuring Marais’s ‘Alcyone’, what with it bearing the traditional family name and all. (Tafelmusik Baroque is in town).

Early day is starting with a triple-shot and good read from Quanta on fractals, visionaries and tech: https://www.quantamagazine.org/the-quest-to-decode-the-mandelbrot-set-maths-famed-fractal-20240126/

Mandelbrot’s memoir “The Fractalist” is still among my favorite books.
And, if ever there’s a ‘Mandelbrot, The Musical!’, the former PopSci troubadour has the first song ready. Earworm of the day is Mandelbrot Set: https://songwhip.com/jonathan-coulton/mandelbrotset

Good day all! I'm pretty busy just at the moment, but I thought audiophiles (as well as regular people) would find this an interesting read or listen. Steven told me about it.
"He spent his life building a $1 million stereo. The real cost was unfathomable.
Ken Fritz turned his home into an audiophile’s dream — the world’s greatest hi-fi. What would it mean in the end?"

@EllieK That was such a tragic story in so many ways, not the least of which was how the children felt. Probably also an object lesson (literally?) in doing things like that when there’s no expectation of getting anything from it but joy and, of course, if doesn’t fry the bank account or relationships.
My books and music obsession pale in comparison!

I always prefer small quiet groups over large garrulous ones—and never more so than this time of year—which is why trio sonatas are winning today.
Listening: Trio Sonatas in 18c Italy (Albinoni and Bonporti on repeat).
Sipping: Duke of Africa tea from newly-discovered gem, Teatopia
Reading: Still on “Once Upon a Prime…” by Sarah Hart. Two of my favorite things bound up in delightful way (literally and figuratively, to go for the double-pun potential here).

Reading: Once Upon a Prime: The Wondrous Connections Between Mathematics and Literature
by Sarah Hart.

Sipping: Halcyon tea. Love having a brew carrying the name that women in my fam pass down across generations.

Well.
My childhood home is being torn down & its woods leveled, to be replaced by a muni utility plant. First piano I played was on the 2nd floor of its unfinished carriage house —an 1860s Chickering square grand that toughed it out from 1912 onwards in the unheated ‘man cave’ of the builder.
Scared the sh*t out of me climbing up there as a free-range 5 yr old, but I was in luuurve with that out-of-tune behemoth.
Sigh.

Happy 42nd Anniversary to Us!

t's hard to believe that this young couple is us, 42 years ago today. There's been a lot of water under all kinds of bridges since then, but we have sailed, paddled, rowed, poled and occasionally motored along them together all the way. Yes, we've had to use buckets to bail at times, but we always managed to stay afloat because we had each other. Thanks for all these wonderful years, @stevenkennard

Sunday Sun Day
Our fields will soon be covered with snow, so this scene can serve to remind me of the lovely light of an early fall day. The morning sun highlighted those tufts of grasses left by the mower so beautifully that they look almost like old-fashioned hay ricks left to dry. Have a lovely day, friends, enjoy the sunshine in your lives whenever you find it. See the post here:

Does optimism vs pessimism have any effect on outcomes and prognosis?

LK_Sass,
@LK_Sass@mas.to avatar

@emmatonkin Yup, kicked off by Norman Cousins and his book, “Anatomy of an Illness.” (I much prefer to remember him as the superb editor of The Saturday Review.)

LK_Sass,
@LK_Sass@mas.to avatar

@mloxton, I can speak only from personal experience. When I received an initial 12-18 month prognosis followed by recovering from CRS-HIPEC, grousing wasn’t going to help. The choice was pile misery on top of existing MDD and anxiety or cope by relying on my survival tactic of humor.
I’m still here—and NED—8 years later and think a positive outlook made a big difference in trusting my care team, open-mindedness and compliance, plus in the attitudes of a very small support network.
