Just surfing on the net, watching those nice pics. After listening a couple of cassette tapes, now I'm convinced that I really need to replace my actual speakers for a 3 way large speakers, suitable for analogue sound and perfect for my 1982 #Pioneer amplifier!

FREE CASSETTE DECK!

Here's the deal: I have too many decks and I want to give one away, along with 20 cassettes.

Why? I love the format, I love the ritual, I love the analogue warmth, and I love introducing people to what tape sounds like on a really good deck. The fully serviced Sony 3 head Dolby S deck has a headphone socket, so you won't even need an amp or speakers.

only (sorry) and all you need to do is reply with what you want to play on it and I'll pick one.

Easy!

I know this is such a niche question, but is anyone using an external DAC to listen to hi-res audio on a phone? What’s your setup?

A friend came over yesterday and was incredulous to learn that I've swapped out my expensive #hifi gear for a late 70s all-in-one Panasonic music centre.

The truth is, I'm now listening to and enjoying more #music on #cassette and #vinyl than I have in a long time.

Alan Parsons has a theory and it feels like he may be onto something:

"Audiophiles don’t use their equipment to listen to your music. Audiophiles use your music to listen to their equipment”

    I'm listening to music again.

Fediverse audiophiles I need your help!

Even if you are not, please boost so more people can see this ❤️

In short, I need a couple of loudspeakers.
Context: since I have so many vinyls and CDs at home I decided to build a simple hi-fi system just for them (like if it was the 2000s 🙃)
I’ve found a second hand Denon avr1708 and a CD player, and I already had a ~10 years old record player. Now I just need a couple of loudspeakers but I literally have 0 idea how to choose one. I just read some infos about ohms and watts but that’s all. I’m also not much an audio expert so I don’t know which kind of “sound” should I be looking for in a speaker.

If you could suggest some specific speaker I would appreciate it, but since I’d prefer to find something second hand I’d rather like tips about what to look in a speaker, also some dos and donts when buying them second hand

What’s the bookshelf speaker equivalent of Sony MDR-7506s or Shure SE215s? JBL 4312s with roots back to 1968? Sony SS-SC5 from 2014? Jones’ 2016 Elac Debut or earlier 2012 Pioneer BS22? Klipsch R series?

    Should be:

    • cheap as possible while not crap
    • old enough that most folks know of it
    • given above, it should be a common reference point when comparing other models

    Do the audio ABX test!

    http://abx.digitalfeed.net/

This web page lets you switch between lossy and lossless audio compression while playing the same song. No delays, no clicks.

You listen to two samples, A and B and need to decide if X == A or X == B.

I hooked up my laptop to my AV receiver / Hifi via HDMI and I had no chance to even hear a difference between A and B.

I'm curious if you can tell the difference on your audio setups?

Wirelessly streaming webradios to that 240-watts analog sound system with #GNOME's Bluetooth settings & @haeckerfelix's "Shortwave" app is the practical cyberpunk future I didn't know I needed!
The app is only missing the ability to auto-switch between preferred PipeWire output devices at runtime (https://gitlab.gnome.org/World/Shortwave/-/issues/547) and it'll be… Chef's Kiss 👌️

Good day all! I'm pretty busy just at the moment, but I thought audiophiles (as well as regular people) would find this an interesting read or listen. Steven told me about it.
"He spent his life building a $1 million stereo. The real cost was unfathomable.
Ken Fritz turned his home into an audiophile’s dream — the world’s greatest hi-fi. What would it mean in the end?"

One of the fun parts about getting into a new hobby is being able to take a new look at established trends and question the need. Case in point, I decided to build a small #hifi system for myself while keeping to a minimum budget. I believe I've done so as it sounds amazing to me, but I do have a few upgrades that I'm waiting on. I attribute this to me being a bit rushed to build something for the holidays and not thinking things through, due to not understanding fully. But I'm satisfied with my last purchases and honestly can't see much more being added on afterwards.

But I have looked at what else I can add and decided it's just not worth it. Specifically a CD player (or CD Transport as some "audiophiles" call them) as well as a tape deck. First, I don't have enough media to warrant either one. Secondly, I already have a record player that I'll eventually upgrade once I build up a proper vinyl collection, so why spend more money on yet more media? I have a dedicated media player, a TIDAL subscription, and I'm quite pleased.

So yeah, I've built up a system from components from AliExpress and Amazon, but it sounds amazing to me and I don't care if I'm not "audiophile" enough for some folks. I do still need a sub just to round things out, and maybe one last amp if I really want to worry about cross-channel contamination, but I don't see that as an issue right now. I think once the new amp and DAC arrive, the next upgrade is some op amps and the sub, but then I'm done. I don't need a 7.1 or Atmos system, nor do I care. I want to be able to disconnect and listen to Bowie, Miles Davis, Florence and the Machine and The Hu when I want to relax. I can stream whatever I don't own, and I don't need to get a new shelving system to hold a bunch of CDs or tapes for bands I may only listen to a few songs from.

Sorry for the novel, I just needed to justify my own thoughts to myself.

Here's my beloved Quad HiFi. Born before DAB and with only 7 FM presets. Limiting these days.

Had a spare #RaspberryPi so stuck Bookworm Lite and VLC on it. Headless on top of the Quad.

Grabbed the stream links from http://www.radiofeeds.co.uk created a VLC playlist for each on a PC. Transferred them to the RPi and created a Dialog to call them using cvlc commands (see pix) from any SSH connected device.

Result, crude but effective. Not really #HiFi but my ears aren't these days ;-)

Screenshot of SSH session with Linux Dialog Radio Menu in centre. Menu is: 1) Boom 2) Scala 3) JazzFM 4) Smooth 5) Planet Rock 6) BBC R6 7) Mellow Magic 9) Shutdown Plus OK & Cancel buttons

Is there anyone who uses a hardware component to files from a or in your network (using protocols like or ) to your amplifier? If so, what are you using and what are you experiences? I would like to have a chat about this matter and it would be nice to make an overview of different solutions with exact features (and bugs!) because this information is almost impossible to find.

Popped into Fopp earlier. The price of vinyl is at the taking the Michael level now. Single vinyl albums at £35- £45. CD's at £18. And yet I could buy Miles Davis' Kind of Blue on CD for £5 (I didn't as I have it on Sacd) #vinyl #CostOfLiving

And it's a con. The nonsense that the analogue signal is smoother and richer is just bollocks. You'd have to have superhuman hearing to detect the difference.
