'Tis the season for maple syrup making. For any who are curious about the history and process, I made a slideshow video about the process and you can watch it on Vimeo here: https://vimeo.com/548606103
It's just under 6 minutes watch. My voiceover.
Edit: So reason has prevailed, and we will not be getting another.
Our ages (74 and 67), potential compatibility issues with current incumbents, and costs have all factored into the decision.
Thanks!
The mother of one of our cats (Zaz) is due to have another litter next week. This is what's going on in my mind.
We have 3 Cornish Rex Cats already:
Badger who is 9, we got as a retired breeder, then aged 6
Pangolin, also retired breeder is about 4
Zaz will be 2 next week. #caturday#EllieKPosts
Edit: I have decided, as we have no guests, to store it in the guestroom cupboard, which has 2 doors!
Zaz has become obsessed with chewing my exercise mat, even rolled up. She finds wherever I hide it, no matter where I put it. If I can reach it, so can she, only more easily. I don't have a cupboard with a door (if I did she would work out how to open it or scratch the door to pieces to try to get in).
Help! #ZazTheCornishRex#caturday#EllieKPosts#CatsOfMastodon
I have been making this vegan cheese/ cheese sauce substitute for years and it's one of our favourites. My tweaks:
Sub sunflower seeds for cashews
Add ½ cup nutritional yeast (+ more liquid)
A quick photo post of the air dried sharp cashew 'cheese' (from Miyoko's recipe) after 4 days of drying. I will next wrap it in greaseproof paper and refrigerate for as long as we can stand to leave it. Or I could just salt the outside lightly again and leave for another few days to deepen in flavour. It's already so good! I think I'll leave it a couple more days, as we already have some of the turmeric black pepper one to eat.
Good morning all!
How strong are you feeling today?
Increasing Muscle Strength and Function in Older Adults with Cocoa Powder
As an older adult (I'm 74), I found this video really interesting and thought of the conversation with Sharon the other day about our shared concern for maintaining muscle strength.
This video (or you can read the transcript) is worth watching:
"The intermittent fasting trend MAY pose risks to your heart
Intermittent fasting — when people only eat at certain times of day — has exploded in popularity in recent years. But now a surprising new study suggests that there MIGHT be reason to be cautious: It found that some intermittent fasters were more likely to die of heart disease.
Zhong said that he and his colleagues .. were surprised by their findings."
Ingredients
1 cup whole grains ( preferably rye for cheese or brown rice, or wheat or Kamut berries, or a combination)
6 cups filtered water
Directions
Soak and sprout the grains.
Put the grains in a 1-quart glass jar and add water to cover. Place a double layer of cheesecloth over the mouth of the jar and secure it with a rubber band. Let the grains soak for 8 to 12 hours. Drain, then add just enough ... #EllieKPosts#ferment
Who's hungry? Pangolin is letting me know she's ready for her second course. She always has to eat her meals in 2 parts, and so she has to let me know when it's time for the next. She's very polite. She is the chattiest of our 3, but quietly understated in her manner.
Good day to all from Pangolin, Zaz, Badger, Steven, and me. #Pangolin#CornishRex#CornishRexCat#EllieKPosts#CatsOfMastodon#Animals#pets#Cats
This looks easy and apparently is really good for diabetics! (Just add healthy toppings, skip the cheese or use a dairy free version. You can make your own using the recipe linked in the crust recipe).
There seems to be a bug in the #Fedilab app as it is randomly, not consistently, truncating usernames.
In this screenshot, you see Auscandoc has been shortened to Ausc, Gertrude is shortened to G.
Although it is entertaining, perhaps it should be fixed?
I thought it might be the instance, but it doesn't happen using Tusky. @apps@Fedilab #bug#FedilabBug#EllieKPosts
An Un-Anniversary Celebration
Memories – from 2014 – a fun throwback story if you want to read on… We are in Quebec city, having a great couple of days on our way home from a bit of a tour around friends and family in Ontario and Quebec. Last night we found a little restaurant, the Café de Paris, (read the tale here... https://www.elliekennard.ca/un-anniversary-celebration/ )
What a great, helpful article:
"What to do if you get COVID
Practical tips to protect yourself from the long tail of risk.
The available science says that there are differences in outcomes for people based on the choices they make after they get COVID, provided they move quickly."
Promising
Red Sky at Night, Sailor's Delight.
With so much uncertainty in the world today, we have to hold on to promises that we’re sure of. This sunset is one reason to always take my camera when I go for a walk […] … but it won’t be long until the warmth will start again, and that’s a promise. Dragonfly
This photo was taken a few years ago in Miner’s Marsh in Kentville reserve, one warm August noon. I hadn’t even seen this beautiful creature as I was busy photographing the sandpiper featured in the post from the other day until Steven pointed it out, so thanks to him for this summer memory on this snowy day today. Wherever these are now, we’ll see them again soon. Full post here: https://www.elliekennard.ca/dragonfly/ #bugsOnMastodon#Dragonfly#EllieKPosts#insects#wildlifewednesday
Solitary Sandpiper
This sandpiper was enjoying the summer mud at Miner’s Marsh in Kentville and apparently finding lots of eat. This was taken a few years ago in my early years of photography, so I was really pleased to catch it so well. I can’t wait until we can have a bit of summer, to be able see the ground, mud or grass! Meanwhile we can enjoy photos like this, to remind us.

Inspiring Ted talk by a Nepali family friend, Rewati Gurung
I admire this amazing lady's achievements through her determination, dedication, and motivation in spite of what might have been insurmountable challenges for many in her situation. Her talk is well worth listening to.
